I think if PJ are gonna do that, they just need to do it well, and this is done well enough

I don't agree that PJ are just "dumb now"; Lukin, Red Dot, always dumb; I can allow them one on each album as long as it doesn't suck
But Lukin is awesome. Whipping is awesome. This spritzy punk shit didn't start until Backspacer era where it kinda permeated throughout the album, with "Devo" influences on GSMF, Got Some, and bad songs like Supersonic and Ole.

Running had potential to be so much better.
I have a special hatred for got some. The audacity of a song to promise you that it’s got some rock song if you need it…when it so clearly doesn’t, is tepid, and tries to hide the mountains of suck behind a few spacey licks

I like SuperSonic and GSMF
hey hey, Vindicator I'm definitely not saying this is as good as Lukin (but at the same time, I don't think there is as much holding it back from being Lukin as you might think; it's the production values, I'm telling ya)

I think it's the word salad delivery to start the track "got me running got me running " ugh. It reminds me of the bad parts of Superblood Wolfmoon and worse, Ole.

I'm telling you, they could have rebuilt this whole track around that awesome bridge as a chorus and we would have a great song. I literally got a bit of chills the other day when the Running clip dropped, only to have it all be deflated, which I admittedly was half expecting.
Lukin goes "AH-FUCKY-FUCKY-FUCKY-FUCKY-FUCKY-FUCKIN'-HOME"... it's also word salad
It helps if you remember that people either like or dislike a thing first, and then analyze its components for explanations after the fact. We aren’t posting experiences, we’re posting autopsies.

Word salad didn’t kill this guy over here, because I like this guy. Word salad killed this one over here. Because I don’t like him.

seriously, the lyrics of Lukin and the lyrics of this song are both in quick-fire 8th notes; to me it feels like "word salad" when it sounds like Ed isn't managing it, and he's managing this fine

I like it
The intro is cool, the bridge is great & I don't think Ed sounds that bad on this
It's certainly not the greatest song they've ever recorded, but it's definitely not the worst song they've ever done either.

All that aside. I'm confused that this was chosen as a single.
When the band is out there saying Dark Matter (album) is their best work...they're not really doing a very good job of selling that point.

If this was a new band and someone said: "Hey, you should check out Pearl Jam...take a listen to Running"
I don't think this one would sell me on this band.

From the reactions of people who have heard this album and from what the band themselves have said in interviews, it would seem that Scared of Fear, React-Respond, Waiting for Stevie & Setting Sun are the albums standouts.

I don't know...just seems like post Vitalogy and with the exception of Yield ...this band have been REALLY awful at choosing their singles. I don't know that is actually by design or if they are just that bad at self accessing their own work and knowing which songs are standouts as opposed to nice album tracks.

First time didn't really know what to think about it, other than ::nods to trag:: the sound quality sucks and the bridge is by far the most hummable part.

Second time, I actually liked it quite a bit more and it reminds me a lot of Rose of Jericho and Good and Evil, albeit I think I like those ones better.

I feel like this belongs in the background of a Sonic the Hedgehog video game, and I've never felt that way about a Pearl Jam song before.

Song is fine, but, It's literally impossible for them to just let something be. Always seems like an extra layer of...i don't want to say artifice, that's harsh, but, mental calculus involved.

Other than Ed's delivery, it has fuck all to do with age, either. Melvins or Bad Religion are around the same age, they get in a room and bang out a song that sounds like when they were 30, it still has a certain spark.

This sounds like trying to be rather than simply being, despite everything we've been told to the contrary.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Lol. Just listened on headphones. fucking OUCH.

I do like the song but holy shit that hurts. Zero instrument separation. zero.

Can't hear Ed at all.

after a coupe listens, i'm definitely on team "the bridge should be the chorus". dropping into that half time groove was a nice switch.. one more time at the end would have been great.

also, eddie and matt cannot perform this song this way live. no chance.

the song's not bad, but i wish these guys would have kept it more real with this record, as opposed to letting the young "super fan" producer push them to be "more aggressive"

I just listened on my Sonos five speakers in stereo format and hear plenty of separation. distinct arts in L and R channel. imagine dolby atoms.

I can't not hear "Potato" on the second one there. I'm hoping that's just Ed describing the size of his dark matter.
Reminds me of the "Banana! Banana! Banana!" line in WWS

Eh, third time I like it quite a bit more even. Gave it a 3. Can't see it cracking 4 yet, but it may indeed be a grower.

I do like the song though. Fun and sexy. That bridge is brilliant.
