Bang on.Huell wrote:Just listened… this makes Superblood Wolfmoon sound like something from Binaural… this band is a creatively burnt out piece of carbon from a previous artistic chemical reaction that they channelled so well up to Riot Act. It sounds so goddamn forced while also having no clever ideas. Have they ever released a rocker with the riff so boring? It’s sounds like filler content music with Ed Vedder shoved up its ass while he gnashes and snares all recorded by a toddler who pushed all the levers to MAX. Fucking hell

This is what would happen if Nirvanas Breed was covered by the Ramones and produced by a kpop producer

I’m with ya. There is so much more going on in TTLW. It’s a much more interesting and musically complex song.tragabigzanda wrote:Apart from word salad, how is there more happening in this than in TTLW? That boggles my mind.DDWJMUVW wrote:There is so much more happening in Running than in ND or TTLW. ND is hard to take seriously because the harmony, melody, and lyrics are all so playful. TTLW just misses on so many levels for me. The Taylor Momsan (sp?) addition is garbage; falsetto in the chorus is a major flaw.
There are layers and complexities in Running that just aren't found in the other two.
My opinion of course and I fully respect that some feel quite the opposite. That's what makes this all fun.

I think TTLW has aged worse for me than any other Gigaton song. I don't particularly dislike it, but it sounds kind of flat to me.SJM wrote:I’m with ya. There is so much more going on in TTLW. Re: Running
still only had the chance to hear this once (will be able to dig in this weekend). Such an odd choice for a single. Songs like this can rarely carry the stand alone weight of a record.
I may end up liking every song on Gigaton more, but that's okay. I like every song on Gigaton quite a bit. But Gigaton also has no 'cool down' songs. This feels like a palette cleanser on first listen.
Superblood Wolfmoon was a 3 star song on first listen and is now my second favorite song on the album. Some days it's my favorite. But SBWM is a deceptively ambitious song. These kind of less self-serious PJ songs tend to take their time to find an audience. Big Wave and Get Right were pretty reviled when they first came out. But none of these (including SBWM) are good single choices.

Re: Running
This seems like one of those songs that would be a favorite tune for some PJ hipsters if it was evaluated within the full context of the album. But as a single there just isn't enough here to survive the scrutiny.

this also is one of those cases where the ambition of the song vs the vitriol leveled against it in places seems slightly out of alignment. As opposed to Dark Matter, which is a song that does seem to want to plant a flag.

That opening bass sounds like a specific IDLES song and I can't put my finger on it. Jeff's an avowed fan, so it checks out.injuddstree wrote:Jeff been jamming with Adam Devonshire?!

I think Gigaton will unfortunately stand as an outlier in the latter half of the band's career.
It's not perfect, there's still arguably too much Ed, but it was their first record in years that felt like it existed in the same universe as Binaural, Riot Act, No Code, etc.

Re: Running
Perhaps Gigaton sounds more ambitious/deceptively clever over time because they spent a long time on it? More chance to add depth. DM might have "lightning in a bottle" moments from the quick recording process that produces a couple of absolute 5 star songs, but the poorer songs aren't as lasting.stip wrote:still only had the chance to hear this once (will be able to dig in this weekend). my partner Julian's comments: "I like it, it has a kind of urgency to it, and the riffs sound like they could be the theme tune to an 80s cult classic cartoon that all the weird kids like"

I think this is landing pretty firmly on the good side of "punky" for me. It's not what I'd ever ask them to write, were I so empowered. But it's not done in by spritz. I'm willing to call this "punk Pearl Jam" rather than "Pearl Jam 'doing' punk."
Mostly I just don't like the core lyrical conceit of water running, shit flushing, etc.

I can see myself enjoying Dark Matter, but I do agree; I expect DM to sit right above BS and LB, unless any of the more involved songs knock my socks offBirds in Hell wrote:Easily.WtOB? wrote:every song on gigaton is better than this.
