But my initial reaction stands: it’s a pretentious piece of mediocrity straining to be original and special.
It’s not.
Parts of it are ridiculous even.
Cap. But sure, fine. It's a Matt song through and through. If you didn't dig Wellwater Conspiracy, I can see how you might not dig TTLW. But at least the riff is weird and off-kilter and different. The song is also a bit starker than a lot of their recent material. A distant cousin to in the moonlight.
Yeah, yeah, exactly — the riff being off kilter and weird is the con here.
It’s there to distract you from an absence of a standout melody.
This is getting worse all the time.
It's another very typical Matt-Cam rocker, cut from the same cloth (if maybe not the same piece) as Evacuation, Get Right, etc.
youre just teeing him up to tell us he thinks those songs suck too.
the thing I like about Running most of all is that it leans into its sense of humour, which I think is what punk (when it works) should do; the thing that makes "funny" PJ all too often not funny is that it's kind of embarrassed to laugh at itself; this song's central metaphor is essentially flushing the toilet, Ed is delivering it with abandon, and I admire that
I think the Frankenbridge is one of the remaining hallmarks of good PJ; I feel like if this bridge was put in a song where it "belonged", it would be a U2 song; the predictability of each part is strengthened by its being in a place you weren't expecting
but the most important thing is that we are all enjoying new pearl jam in the presence of each other’s company and not descending into Lightning Bolt era levels of acrimony and despair
