I think what I'm coming to is I wouldn't otherwise go for the sort of music PJ makes anymore, and at this point my fandom is more a habit than a true love affair, so I approach the music with an extremely critical eye...

I'd be more forgiving of this absolutely shitty music they're turning out if the business practices behind it were highly ethical. But they're not. So absent any sort of ideological bent I can attach my heart too, all I'm left with is the music, and I mostly hate it.

This is midlife crisis music from a band with multiple vacation homes.

I feel similarly but that’s probably heightened by the fact that I have little emotional connection to the band: sure, I liked them, but they were never my favorite band, not even close.

If it weren’t for this board, I doubt I would’ve listened to any Pearl Jam record made in the last 20 years.

what's the difference between multiple vacation homes and the multi-thousand dollar audiophile music and cinema room the vast majority of PJ fans have set up? I got laughed at for doing most of my listening on my phone, where's the good ethical values in that?

This is REALLY interesting to me. I was posting just last night about my love of Ice Spice, and how great rap music is often the pure product of its environments...

I generally regard all music as one might the work of Alan Lomax or David Lewiston, who traveled the globe and chronicled indigenous music for the rest of the world to hear. Rarely do I make any attempt to separate the art from the artist; the music is a window into the world of the people making it.

I'm not sure that "punk" equals "cheap." But it DEFINITELY doesn't equal whatever it is Wotman's doing.

Two points:

1. I think the impact of Beth on Ed’s 90s stances, persona and art is widely under examined and appreciated; and

2. I don’t really care about Ed’s values, and never did too much, I just think his current approach seems destined to make bad (or pretty mediocre) art.

This supports my long standing theory that Beth wrote or cowrote much of the early material and that’s why there is such a sharp drop off in quality
