It’s been too much fun.

So far today…
Coffee from modern coffee co - also excellent.
Breakfast at Dishoom - wife got bacon and eggs wrapped in naan, very good. I got the porridge w/medjool dates and bananas. It was bottomless, but one bowl was hearty enough. Also got chai, which was delicious.
Drinking champagne at the station while we wait for the train to Paris.

Life is wild.

I only met one potato in London I didn't care for - the chips at a pub the day we arrived. Too flimsy for my liking.

It also rained two of the three days we were there. I think it’s following us to Paris.

There is a hog in me . . . a snout and a belly . . . a machinery for eating and grunting . . . a machinery for sleeping satisfied in the sun—I got this too from the wilderness and the wilderness will not let it go.

There is a fish in me . . . I know I came from salt-blue water-gates . . . I scurried with shoals of herring . . . I blew waterspouts with porpoises . . . before land was . . . before the water went down . . . before Noah . . . before the first chapter of Genesis.

There is a baboon in me . . . clambering-clawed . . . dog-faced . . . yawping a galoot's hunger . . . hairy under the armpits . . . here are the hawk-eyed hankering men . . . here are the blonde and blue-eyed women . . . here they hide curled asleep waiting . . . ready to snarl and kill . . . ready to sing and give milk . . . waiting—I keep the baboon because the wilderness says so.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.

O, I got a zoo, I got a menagerie, inside my ribs, under my bony head, under my red-valve heart—and I got something else: it is a man-child heart, a woman-child heart: it is a father and mother and lover: it came from God-Knows-Where: it is going to God-Knows-Where—For I am the keeper of the zoo: I say yes and no: I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness.

Today is the last full day of our trip, and it’s probably for the best. I’ve reached peak museums and tours, and all the walking. So much walking. Of the three cities we’ve stayed in - London, Paris, Rome - Rome is my least favorite. I’m over smokers on every corner, them clustering outside of cafes as their cigarette smoke wafts inside, and the occasional sour trash smells walking the streets. There were smokers in London and Paris too, but not as bad. I’m also over the hit or miss restrooms in Italy.

I didn’t get to eat at chez George’s - sorry, doug. They were booked the whole time we were there. And honestly, trad French food doesn’t look all that great. We probably had the best meals in Paris though, and Dishoom in London was so damn good. I’ve got Paris dinner and drinks (and coffee) recs for anyone interested.

I feel fortunate to have seen things I’d only ever seen in books or tv. We both feel that way. It’s time to get back to our routines.

I woke up this morning with a foggy head and a sore throat. Glad it’s come on at the end of things.

Puerto Rico for five nights in May. Mostly San Juan. Attending a wedding, forest exploration, bay kayaking, San Juan Viejo strolling, and plenty of beach time on the agenda. I think I’ve scoped some good-looking restaurants, but I’m open to tips.
