Light Years is better than Running but I'd definitely prefer to listen to Running right now

Nothing As It Seems is better than Running (and Dark Matter) but less fun to play ten times in a row

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I believe you, but it is still nearly incomprehensible to me that this happened.tommy wrote:Hearing NAIS on the radio is what got me into Pearl Jam.stip wrote:*Running and Dark Matter are both better singles choices than Nothing As It Seems

Light Years is an even better example of the band having good taste and scrapping something mediocre for something better.stip wrote:Light Years is a great example of Pearl Jam actively sabotaging a songtree_ wrote:ed sounds so weird on light years

Re: Running
yeah when NAIS came out, it became very difficult for me to explain to my HS friends my ongoing PJ fandom .. but now I consider it one of their best songs from the era

Re: Running
NAIS is a pretty brilliant choice if your intent is to make clear how that album is going to sound and differentiate itself from its predecessor. But I actually think almost all of their first singles for their records do this pretty well.

When NAiS hit radio, I had a friend tell me it was the perfect demonstration of a Pearl Jam song: very interesting delivery of some terribly boring writing.

Re: Running
I'm not catching up on 50 pages of this thread, but I have 2 comments to make.
I listened to Running today after 'sleep mentioned it was out in the wild as I was finishing work today. This after I literally waited with baited breath to hit "play" on Dark Matter as it hit Spotify.
First listen impressions? Not in a hurry to relisten. Kinda' blech'.
Second comment - what's with this stip schtick?

Re: Running
I listened to this again this morning; I think I wish they managed to maintain what they had in first 30 seconds, the bass intro is pretty menacing and Eddie sounds way more locked in than he does for the rest of the song.

Re: Running
it does do that (and NAIS is categorically a great song). But.... nevermind. I was going to list better choices to do that and didn't come up with one.digster wrote:NAIS is a pretty brilliant choice if your intent is to make clear how that album is going to sound and differentiate itself from its predecessor. Re: Running
Nothing As It Seems may have been a good choice for a single. Possibly better than Running, but this cannot be known for certain until we hear the whole album

When NAIS premiered on the radio, I remember the DJ in Cincinnati (Not Johnny Fever) came on afterwards and said: "Well...that song sucks" LOLMcParadigm wrote:When NAiS hit radio, I had a friend tell me it was the perfect demonstration of a Pearl Jam song: very interesting delivery of some terribly boring writing.
I was so pissed off ...I swore never to listen to that radio station again.
