We've hashed this out endlessly over the years, but it always surprises me to see people expecting love for the band to be the default position and criticism as a kind of deviation.

So many years of this and you still miss the point that is being made, BiH.

There is a reason that when this boils up it's very rarely (if ever?) targeted at you, and you are arguably the most consistently critical poster. Why do you suppose that is?

If I'm reading you right, you're suggesting that because Spenno delivers measured criticisms, he's not the source of RP's complaint; and that posters who are more salty therefore are the source of conflict...

All I know is, I'm right in the thick of watching my PJ fandom die. I was really looking forward to this record and tour, and my disappointment and disillusionment are accelerating at a rapid pace, and I've completely gone from a lifelong PJ fan to a former PJ fan within the span of about six weeks, and it seems like the hits keep coming. Frankly it feels really crappy and a little weird.

So the saltiness is born out of that, and at least for my part it's a way of processing a sort of mourning. But playing directly into that is the sort of unvarnished enthusiasm that the band is getting lately that frankly I don't think they deserve. And I can say "five stars for Dark Matter, oh come on...", and others can say "Hey don't try to force your views on us, we love this song," and the critical back and forth holds its own merit. But I don't think it needs to be sanitized for the sake of others' feelings. This isn't a kindergarten class, and while I agree there's a line of personal attacks that shouldn't be crossed, it absolutely gets crossed by the PJ lovers as much as the haters.

My opinion is that PJ is a joke of a band now, that they're a wholly commercial enterprise that is out of touch with the (possibly false) ideals they bandied about for years, and that their music sounds simultaneously uninspired and overcooked. It would be easy for me to share that opinion calmly and gently, but when you start adding in some of the truly extractive capitalist approaches they've taken recently -- the ticket BS, the poster artist compensation thing, the EB charity thing, and now this nonsense with the vinyl variants that has a real impact on smaller bands with less buying power -- they start to look downright shitty, and they deserve all the vitriol I can muster.

Fuck 'em. And fuck you if you're someone who tries to characterize this as "negativity" or somehow infringing on your ability to love them while I laugh at them.

Trag, I understand the mourning for the Pearl Jam you grew up with; I've done it over and over, since S/T; now I'm at the stage where I'll aggressively defend my right to enjoy stuff more than I expected to; I'm on the other side of a lot of pain, some of what I think you're feeling now, and I've decided that it's OK that PJ aren't that band anymore, they still write cool songs at times; the new Elbow album is a million times better than Dark Matter is going to be

3 listens. This sounds very processed and generic. Like the offspring until the improved last 30 seconds. Like dark matter I appreciate the unintelligible lyrics and have high hopes these songs will sound better live. I don't get putting Ed so low in the mix if there is nothing interesting going on with the music. These first two songs do not bode well.

It's too early to tell, but this album kinda sounds like what I thought they should have sounded like back in the aughts, if relevance was what they were truly going after. But they never could figure it out, so just churned out overprocessed dadrock crap. It's too late now to be relevant, and this isn't my first choice, but I don't hate it. It's alright.

Rewind 24 years to Roskilde. Their future looked bleak. Now ask yourself, if I could be guaranteed they’d still be around making new music and touring in 2024, would it make me smile?

I am sure all of us would say yes.

Accept that some fans love the current form. Accept that some have reasonable criticisms.

If you’re so disillusioned you don’t enjoy this, you should probably find a new band.

Homme has generally done a stellar job of marrying his rock roots with slick production. All those albums sound awesome (except I thought it dipped considerably with Times New Roman)
