I'm in the UK, remember, it had a very small following here of country fans already familiar with country because country was their thing; now you don't have to search for "country" to find people who like country, so to speak; I can find them at a Sleep Token concertJorge wrote:Country was enormous in the 90s, probably more than now even, but I take your point

I do think, however, that Ed’s proletariat lyrics generally feel like cosplay to me now. Not sure if that actually applies here because I haven’t spent any time with the lyrics, but generally speaking I’d say PJ doing punk music, fine but tired; Eddie doing punk lyrics, lol. He should keep singing about his friends’ kitchens.

Re: Running
I'm working off of memory here, but if I recall the explanation about the expense ticket prices thing on the SOLAT podcast:
1. Yes pearl jam's tickets are more expensive than they used to be, and increased faster than inflation, but they are below what they could be charging and many comparable artists
2. Ticket master does dynamic pricing for a certain percentage of tickets (they keep raising the price to whatever level a fan will pay. So that's where 900 tickets come from, and if no one buys them they go back down)
3. Pearl Jam's number was 10% dynamic pricing, which is on the low end of available seats
4. Ticket master maintains a fan to fan resale (not every artist has this) to support direct resales of tickets with no additional markups
It doesn't make tickets cheaper, but I do recall these explanations taking some of the sting out of that story. This was from a guest knowledgeable about this stuff, but it's the only source I heard

it's funny how it's ok for ticketmaster to take advantage of the free market, but 10 clubbers will be bounced out of the fan club if they try tostip wrote:

“Eddie wisely makes the choice to sing in a lower register, resisting the higher, sharper vocals that he often brings to songs like this. Thus far the Dark Matter performances we’ve heard feel like a combination of Riot Act’s range (the space he should be inhabiting) melded with the spitfire energy of the S/T record, and they sit within the music rather than lying on top of it”
This is probably why I’ve enjoyed the two songs so much so far. Best of both worlds.

Re: Running
The outro baffles me until the very last seconds. I think its just a bit much and somewhat frustrating you can't hear a goddamn thing Ed is saying.
However, when ed gives that final frustrating AHHHH! and the double hit ending.....
Chills.

Re: Running
“A superficial read of Running is that this is an older band trying to recapture their youth. And while your mileage of the song as a song may vary, this interpretation strikes me as overly cynical, and probably wrong. The critique, the tension, the defiance, the commitment, and the grasping need for the world to be better than it is- this is who Pearl Jam are, and what their music has always been. The context changes, but the core remains the same. You can’t recapture something you’ve never let go.”
This sentiment is spot on. This song is a frantic call to change things, figure things out, before we run out of time, whether by means of the world going to hell or quite simply aging and dying before we’ve done what we need to do. That sentiment has always been there with Pearl Jam. The urgency has changed because they are much older now.

Thanks for highlighting this part of the write-up, and for expanding on it.
