When you hear those songs, like Whipping, Lukin o Habit, you can feel they're convincing.

I hear Supersonic, Comatose, Never Destination or Running and I don't feel that, not by a thousand miles. And it's being a while since I can buy into a punk song by PJ, so I'd rather see them doing what they do best, and what is really convincing. Even if that is filling an album with 10 songs like Buckle Up, Pendulum or River Cross.

never destination and especially supersonic are many hundreds of miles away from those songs you mention above. Its not a particularly good comparison.

Comatose is far ahead of habit, far, far ahead of lukin (Eddie in particular is the weak link of those songs for me. Whipping is close. Comatose is a gem - he boils up all his rage over the first 4 years of the bush administration, and the americans who let it happen, into those three minutes. incredible song

Ask Epilogue about Habit. though he’ll say the same thing about comatose, in fairness.

Maybe young Ed was a good punk singer (I remember Speed Wash from New year's eve 1991, for example), even great, but old Ed is a bad bad punk singer. Way too many words, too fast and too similar every single time.

And he can't sing this songs live, but that's a whole other thing.

so with the caveat that spritzy punker is a term that means something different to everyone and is generally shorthand for ‘fast song i don’t like’ Eddie has some pretty great performances in this vein. WWS, Comatose, and Mind Your Manners Come to mind. Most of SBWM as well. All 5 star, tremendous songs that he generally just kills

WWS is a rock song, I don't put it in the same category. I'd say the first spritzy punk song they put on a record was Whipping. Spin the black circle is the pinnacle of PJ doing punk.

And none of the songs you name are 5 star songs, not even close, with or without Ed.

Whipping is absolutely fantastic though

Yes it is.

But it's not at my top of the band.

In fact, I did a list of their whole catalog according to my taste when the pandemic hit, I'm gonna take a look and see where I put it.

From 100 to 30 you can basically interchange the songs each and every day, just according to the mood.

I’m on lighting for a middle school production of The Lion king this weekend. One more show tonight. I can easily say that DM and Running are better than what I’ve been subjected to this weekend

Don’t get me wrong, the songs in Lion king are great. And my wife is directing this particular production. But again, exhibit A: middle schoolers singing them 4 times in two days plus tech week all last week!

A song with Running's bridge as a chorus.

Even Stone says in the Spin article that he loves that bridge (it's Mike's, I think).

It would be a little weird and exciting to me.

whereas I think putting that bridge in a song it "belongs" in *could* make it the butt rock you don't want; it's made weirder by the parts surrounding it

It is, indeed, the most generic radio rock part of either of the songs we’ve heard so far. People just imbue it with other qualities because they like it. It’s done well, it has a memorable melody, and it’s fun to listen to.

But we don’t like to say “I especially liked that formulaic arena rock radio-friendly bridge,” because that doesn’t make us feel very cool.

So because I like it, it must have other qualities that I have previously identified as the type of that thing I, a discernible listener, gravitate towards. And not the kind of qualities that I don’t think of myself as approving of.

This feels like a passive-aggressive response to what I said earlier, so in case it is, let me reiterate that I love a lot of arena rock radio-friendly music, including albums by STP, the Foo Fighters, RHCP, Gin Blossoms, and more.

The difference is that those are done well and this is done like a functionally deaf person got their hands on Reaper and Waves, pounded some tequila, and went to town.
