Regardless of the dictionary definition, some people see masterpiece as a way to describe a creative or technical highwater mark (an artist’s master piece). Others assign it to most any work that feels exemplary. Still others would argue that very few works exist worthy of the term.

So it’s all subjective. Perhaps the only objective fact is that neither Gigaton nor Binaural is a masterpiece, but they both grew out of great and interesting creative ground, and that makes them more interesting than their base quality level.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

all that considered, I refuse to "come on"
Yes. Gigaton is an album I almost always play all the way through, because it sounds so good that way.

it's of a piece, it all belongs together, it sounds composed both sonically and thematically

I like Gigaton, but it's the Pearl Jam album I most fall asleep to. Not because of any particularly bad songs, or anything. Those last 15 minutes are just a lot after already listening to 40 minutes of music.

is this the song Jeff cites when talking about EV sounding like he's rapping? the vocal cadence is super fun. with that said, no shot they pull this off live lol. it's a fun rocker, i'd say it's on par with 'superblood wolf moon' if we are comparing second singles.

i don't think any song on the new album is going to be as good as 'DOTC', so my bar is set a little differently.

I have Gigaton as better, but I also hold Avocado in pretty high esteem and the gap is not that wide. If Josh Evans had produced it, it may have taken the cake in this battle.

Avocado is so frustrating because it's their worst sounding album but contains some awesome songs

For me Gigaton felt like a great album in the moment. I think it was (at least from my perspective given what was going on spring/summer of 2020).

But, sadly, it hasn’t aged as well as I would have thought, though a few tracks are still on my rotation (DoTC, 7, WES, alright).

Many others are hardly heard.

So, for me a much better effort than LB and I enjoy it more than BS.

I feel as though few tracks were missing just a couple elements that could have made them great and thus elevated this record in the rankings.

My only issue with Gigaton is its too long - the album should end on Comes Then Goes (scrap Retrograde and River Cross)

Stone mentioned in the Spin interview that Ed's vocal dexterity in Running and also the second verse of React, Respond, where he is almost rapping, is something to behold.

If Im being honest with myself, Pearl Jam has 3 masterpiece records. Ten -> Vitalogy, a 3 album stretch that in my opinion has never been bettered. Every other record falls below those heights - but I dont need them to be. there is a near mystical singularity to my relationship with those songs (and they are the ones that endured). For me its a question of how many good to great songs did it produce and do they cohere sonically and thematically in a way that elevates the material. Gigaton did the later in spades. still does
