Re: Running
those 3 are classics yeah, but with so much time and more work thats passed im always more inclined to listen to recent stuff. Gigaton was a surprise to me and its still holding up very high on my list, perhaphs because the songs are still new? maybe because it became the soundtrack for the pandemic and it felt as vital and necessary as, lets say, No Code as a kid growing up? i dont know...but those songs really spoke to me in a way most of the younger artists didnt.stip wrote:If Im being honest with myself, Pearl Jam has 3 masterpiece records. Ten -> Vitalogy, a 3 album stretch that in my opinion has never been bettered. Every other record falls below those heights - but I dont need them to be. there is a near mystical singularity to my relationship with those songs (and they are the ones that endured). For me its a question of how many good to great songs did it produce and do they cohere sonically and thematically in a way that elevates the material. Gigaton did the later in spades. still does

i don't think any song on the new album is going to be as good as 'DOTC', so my bar is set a little differently.
ed's gotta rap better than jeff, right?

Why? Isn't the only opinion that matters your own? Personally, I have Gigaton as their second best and Vs as their fourth, but my top 5 are practically interchangeable. Also, Ten, which in many ways scores highest with me, is an album that I hardly ever listen to and could probably go the rest of my life without hearing again. Being a fan is a dynamic equation.DeeDee wrote:1. VSVinylGuy wrote:RANK EM

I'm certain that Backspacer and Lightning Bolt are at the bottom of my list but the rest fluctuate depending on what I'm in the mood for.
Ten, Vs, Vitalogy and Avocado for aggression and sheer power...
No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, and Gigaton more for the atmosphere and overall artistic statement...

Nicely said. Riot Act is currently my number 8 but I listen to it more than any other except Gigaton. It's moodiness is just what I need many days.EBowie wrote:I'm certain that Backspacer and Lightning Bolt are at the bottom of my list but the rest fluctuate depending on what I'm in the mood for.

Would you be a diehard PJ fan if the first record they put out was Gigaton?RockPusher wrote:Why? Isn't the only opinion that matters your own? The fact that you can live without listening to Ten again doesn't erase other fact: Ten is a legendary album, Gigaton is not.
And the most important thing to me: the songs. Changing the subject and talking about Vs, I can't see Never Destination being better than RVM, or Buckle up better than Leash, or River Cross better than Indifference, or Who Ever Said better than Go, or SWBM better than Daughter, and so on. We are talking about worlds apart.
I just can't comprehend it.
All due respect.

Re: Running
Yeah it's weird for me to try to rank them. For example, Vs contains an astonishing number of amazing songs but I think I prefer Yield more as an album. Even though I realize that objectively Vs. has more strong songs than Yield.
