So in that regard, I apologize to all of you who love DM or Running that I've given a hard time to, because I absolutely love this song. It is funny how sometimes the "oddballs" hit with certain people. This is definitely in my personal top 10 PJ.
I'm posting this here from the Get Right thread for any of you I may have upset or offended in discussing the new songs. I'll try my best to remind myself of this when the album comes out. (not that the new songs are "oddballs" but that everyone has their own taste). It is mostly Ed's vocals at this point that worry me for the album.
Would we like Get Right if it were released today?

huge admiration for posting this - no matter what we think of the new stuff, I think we can all acknowledge that Pearl Jam have given us decades of both "fuck yeah" *and* "what the fuck?" in a sense, there's nothing new under the sun

I forgive various faults in Ed's voice at this point; a few things I think Watt has done right:

- put Ed's voice in his comfortable range when he's singing, and encouraged shouting rather than AC/DC screaming everywhere else

- burying Ed's voice within the instruments, so that the songs sound like a band is playing them, rather than Ed is fronting session musicians

- and (again, imho) reducing Ed's multiple syllabic phrasing of single-syllable words; I can only really spot it once, during DM

- also reduced the word salad (hold it, let me explain!); for me, singing in 8th notes during a fast punk number is fine; when he tries to squeeze in 16th notes with the 8th notes, that sounds really silly and I start to think "really, that line would have taken seconds to rewrite"; Running is full of 8th notes in the verse and chorus, with some strategic pauses, and it all opens up for a welcome breather of quarter notes in the bridge; then, during the outro, we have fragments that are yelled in 8th notes, with decent breaks between; that's some good shit, imho

Not gonna lie- I really like Something Special. Sweet alt-country numbers from PJ or Ed almost always hit the spot with me.

I hear you... "Something Special" has been my most anticipated track since listening to the metal door clips.
The vocal melody on that thing is just what I need these days.
Also can't wait to put it on a playlist next to "Sleeping by Myself".

it sounds good to me as well, I'm really hoping there's just a little bit of something off-kilter in it; some weirdness in the bridge, some electric guitar where I might not expect, just something that lifts it from the Lightning Bolt-esque pedestrian

I look forward to it being very, very funny to hear the end of Running segue into that song.

haha if the album is good as a whole then it'll be quirky; if the album is bad it'll be awful

So that listening party in London was a bit of a letdown for us, as far as getting new information/leaks goes. I'm amazed there isn't more coming out from those who attended. The wait for the album release is getting tougher than I'd hoped or expected.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.
