Every other record falls below those heights - but I dont need them to be. there is a near mystical singularity to my relationship with those songs (and they are the ones that endured). For me its a question of how many good to great songs did it produce and do they cohere sonically and thematically in a way that elevates the material. Gigaton did the later in spades. still does
Yield is a and maybe THE masterpiece.
Yield is fine. It's a good album

MY TOP PJ ALBUMS:

NO CODE BECAUSE IT HAS A SONG ABOUT THE DEVIL PAYING ME A VISIT.

VITALOGY BECAUSE IT HAS A SONG ABOUT SATAN TAKING A NAP ON HER BED.

THAT IS ALL.

I think that’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard. How marvelous.

The fact that you can live without listening to Ten again doesn't erase other fact: Ten is a legendary album, Gigaton is not.

And the most important thing to me: the songs. I can't see Never Destination being better than RVM, or Buckle up better than Leash, or River Cross better than Indifference, or Who Ever Said better than Go, or SWBM better than Daughter, and so on. We are talking about worlds apart.

I just can't comprehend it.

All due respect.
That's part of being human. We can't comprehend how other people think. Yeah, I probably would be a die-hard if the first record was Gigaton. It's authentic Pearl Jam to me, in the same way those Vs. songs are to you. Now as a little thought exercise, let's see how these play out in my brain:

RVM>ND
BU>Leash
Indifference>River Cross but it's closer than you'd think
WES>Go but again, very close
Daughter>SBWM

Different strokes for different folks. I absolutely adore the song "Come Back." Many PJ fans think it's one of their worst. I can't stand "Johnny Guitar" and many here think it's one of their best. Thank god that PJ has offered us such a diverse experience.
Come Back is a very beautiful song, one of their last great ballads.

It hurts my heart seeing Buckle up > Leash, it really does.

I just think the songs of Vs are better in every sense: the music, the performance, the production, everything.

But I respect how you feel even if I can find it impossible to understand.

I sometimes forget, but man No Code through Riot Act was such a solid run.
No Code through Riot Act was the best run for PJ. They sounded like a rock band authentically progressing and evolving into a mature, somewhat experimental, somewhat still rocking, band. They knew how to push the envelope, but never straying from what they do best. Taking risks, but never stepping out of line into ridiculousness or self-awarenessless.

It all started to go down hill with Avocado, with a few ups and a few downs in between, but it has never been the same since.
It was a good run, but not the best.

1991-1998 remains unparalelled, live and in studio.

1991-1994. 2008-2024. 1995-2007

that is the correct order. or its my order. I am prepared to concede it is slightly idiosyncratic

Regardless of the dictionary definition, some people see masterpiece as a way to describe a creative or technical highwater mark (an artist’s master piece). Others assign it to most any work that feels exemplary. Still others would argue that very few works exist worthy of the term.

So it’s all subjective. Perhaps the only objective fact is that neither Gigaton nor Binaural is a masterpiece, but they both grew out of great and interesting creative ground, and that makes them more interesting than their base quality level.
That set-up was a masterpiece...the post, a fully satisfying emotional ride
The song is a 3. Getting that post in the full context bumps it up to the 3.7/3.8 range.

To me, and to put just a handful of songs, I got Id, Off he goes, Present Tense, In My Tree, Yield as a whole, Light Years, NAIS and Insignificance are better than everything the've done between 2008 and 2024.

On that list there are only a few songs I'd put up there with the very best of the most recent era. Brain of J, Wishlist, GTF, and DTE. I recognize that compositionally more songs are up there, but in terms of their impact on me that's it.

Those are, for the most part, all good songs you highlighted, though. The amount of Pearl Jam studio album I actively dislike is probably less than 10

I don’t like either of these songs so far, I don’t even have the initial enjoyment I got out of backspacer tracks I hated within a month. I loved gigaton but I’m not into anything I’ve heard from this yet.

It’s funny that I still think of the as the “middle years” when they are a quarter of a century ago.
