I think Ed is acknowledging religion and that it is OK to believe, but just don't force it down people's throats.
LB really shows that he decided "putting faith in no faith" and that he is "metaphysically redeemed". By the way, I think he only does not believe in what people usually call "a belief", because some admits believing in a God of love, or anything that spreads community, but never pratice love (this being a feeling very present since Binaural on their lyrics).
There are other controverses. FD also says that he "focused on a prayer" when he was down and the whole album keep talking about death. Swallowed Whole is another controversial song, that's why it's clear that LB is an album divided in two.
It seems he is in doubt; he can't admit he believe in something, first because he doesn't see it, feel it, nor feel any response. Also, how can he join a group of people that says that want a better world, but our world is shit, and many of these people want the world the way it is, or even walk back? He has always felt abandoned by "something that have never showed him anything", and his social, political and economical views always point to hypocrisy in the whole world. On the other side, he admits getting old, and one day, he will be gone. So, he is connected with the world, surrounded, like a constant noise with all these things. "With no quiet to be found, spirit lifted off the ground, and what comes beyond the grave might be welcomed change, and will come, come what may, with no rest in peace until that day". What it means? "I don't fucking know what's beyond death, I usually do not believe (by those reasons I said), but for real? Come what may, no matter what comes, I will accept with open heart".
