Re: Dark Matter (song)
In addition to being a mediocre song, Got Some is just a bad song for HIM to sing. It plays to none of his strengths. Every moment of every performance, he sounds like he’s still figuring out what to do with it.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
You can start to hear some of his modern vocal tics/limitations on the S/T tour, but he still had a lot of power. I don't think he really fully learned to adapt to his new voice until about 2016-2018 or so. Some of those 2008-2014 boots are rough. Down tuning and slowing down songs have helped a lot.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
i like got some a fair bit on the strength of the music, but it might be his weakest performance on a primary album. the non-entiity lyrics dont help. there’s very little to grasp on to

I Agree, I always disliked the song because of it…its just not for him, I think its a song written to be more shouted and he stands on the wall trying to shout words and sing at the same time.McParadigm wrote:In addition to being a mediocre song, Got Some is just a bad song for HIM to sing. There are some very good moments on Backspacer however, singing wise, FoN, ATW, love the Johnny Guitar performance, its kind of unique from him.

The one vocal performance on album i was more disapointed was Lightning Bolt, I think the song could have been sung a different way…live is wayyyyyy better. Dunno if thats a BoB thing…stip wrote:i like got some a fair bit on the strength of the music, but it might be his weakest performance on a primary album. the non-entiity lyrics dont help. there’s very little to grasp on to

I really like the third verse (after the chorus) in L-bolt. very michael stipe in its delivery (reminds me of supernatural superserious). and the increasing awe filled breathlessness of its end. but the start of that performance holds it back a bit

I agree, LB is one song where I like his higher register more, even with his voice crackingstip wrote:I really like the third verse (after the chorus) in L-bolt. very michael stipe in its delivery (reminds me of supernatural superserious). and the increasing awe filled breathlessness of its end. but the start of that performance holds it back a bit

Yeah, the way he sings the first verses of the song are just…weird, I get the storytelling vibe is going for but just seems off… and i just hate the enunciation of “like a stuowuuuneeeee”.stip wrote:I really like the third verse (after the chorus) in L-bolt. very michael stipe in its delivery (reminds me of supernatural superserious). and the increasing awe filled breathlessness of its end. but the start of that performance holds it back a bit
But it does get better and ends on a very good note. Just had massive potential…

With that kind of riff and vocal part it was a stillborn child.

This is still coming on the radio over here (double J). That still gets me excited that others are into it and I turn it up.

Has Brendan O'Brien worked since Lightning Bolt?

You've heard the piano on Future Days. My gut tells me no.Clem Halibut wrote:Has Brendan O'Brien worked since Lightning Bolt?
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I'm the perfect demographic. I probably discover most of my new music on there as well.Higgs wrote:Such a good station, even better now D-Lord is doing Breakfast. double j is fucking excellent and i wish i listened to it more. digital radio just isn’t as convenient as standard, terrestrial radio tho.

Not that I'm aware of. Pretty slow few days as far as PJ content goes after such a whirlwind few weeks.

I listen to it all the time in my car and occasionally at home through my Sonos set up. Can't remember the last time I tuned in an old school FM radio station though.WtOB? wrote:double j is fucking excellent and i wish i listened to it more. digital radio just isn’t as convenient as standard, terrestrial radio tho.
