Wait, amp pedals?

I'd be truly shocked if they were using amp pedals (to achieve OD) and not going through actual tube amps. Maybe something with their signal chains using Wottman's equipment so that it sounds vastly different?

I really think you're hearing what was done in production/engineering/mixing and not recording.

In any event, it's nice to actually hear distorted guitars in a PJ song. First time since what, ST? I grew real tired of the bluesy crunch (and in some cases I could barely detect any semblance of overdrive). I mean, are there even guitars in Infallible? Sounds like a bunch of synths.

Idk man — I know the sound of tube gain distortion vs digital simulated distortion. There’s a synthetic quality to the consistency of breakup that happens with sims, and that’s fairly apparent on these.

I'm a few pages behind, so forgive me if already covered, but it's (maybe?) worth noting both Stone and Mike used Fender Tonemaster digital modelling amps (essentially amp sim software sitting in a speaker cabinet) for their clean tones on the Gigaton-era shows, most of which took place either during or entirely after the sessions for the new record.

I don't think it's emulator pedals, I think it's software. They may have amps in the room being mic'd for reference but there's something happening on the software side that is having an impact aesthetically that *feels* like a pure software based amp emulation.

I think this could be the case. That said, Wotman's recording space seems pretty small and I expect getting well-separated, defined guitar recordings in that environment would be challenging - also no amps in sight:

I bet that fucker has his guitars wired direct into ProTools with headphone monitors feeding the musicians the amp sims.

This is uncharitable but he strikes me as someone deeply invested in the aesthetics of rock music, particularly mainstream popular rock music.

Playing vintage guitars through software amp sims reinforces that: it’s the wrong way around. Play any old guitar through a vintage amp (or one built the same way) and it’s going to yield great results but a vintage guitar through an amp sim is always going to sound characterless. They definitely look really cool, however.

I put that video on and then kinda stopped paying attention after a few minutes. But suddenly, I heard my guitar being strummed.

Never really appreciated before, just how distinct the sound of those D-28s is.
