no one is against those kinds of effects per se. in certain cases i'm sure it can make the final product better. in the case of pendulum, it doesn't. that's all.

This is one word randomly in the middle of the song.
I don't hear chipmunking. But yeah, I can see that. But there has been reverb throughout the song, so to me it's not so bad because all that's happening is the reverb is being turned up for that one line. It's not an effect that hasn't been used at all. The whole song is so awash with reverb anyway that for me it works.

I don't think it makes it worse either. I guess I often see these effects as superfluous, even on Binaural. The problem with S/T is that it had none of them, and really sounded bland because there was no wizardry at all.

Anyway, you guys hate the effect. I don't really care about it. It doesn't matter.

Tom Waits also makes music that is tailor-designed to sound like radio transmissions from the bowels of hell (or, at the very least, from a bygone era of American history)--he uses the effect to effect. On "Pendulum" it just sounds like someone forgot to turn down the input level.

I totally see what you're saying. But I like the effect on Pendulum, even if it is just forgetting to turn down the input level. And I hope it's something they continue to explore as a band. Because I think there's a way for them to use something like that in a way that would appropriate for them. The same way Waits does it in a way appropriate for his style.

Maybe what we're seeing with Pendulum (and some other tracks on LB) is the beginning of something really cool.

OK, I can see that.

The only production "mistake" I've noticed is on Swallowed Whole.

I'm curious what you're referring to. Have you discussed it in the SW thread? Or is this a new observation?

No, yeah, I mentioned it once. Someone (I can't remember who) replied that they could hear it as well. Basically, during the intro guitar, there is a very faint drum track underneath, hats and snare included. It sounds like something that was there before, which they've turned down low in the mix but forgotten to cut completely. All of that's before Matt comes in for the actual drum track, and none of it would be a problem if it wasn't all ahead of the strumming beat / out of time. See if you can hear it on headphones.

Since I first heard it, I haven't been able to unhear it. It's very frustrating and I'm having to wilfully ignore it to enjoy the song. The problem's gone when Matt's first snare hit comes in.

It is quite annoying.

I don't really see what you guys are on about. Pendulum live is very good but Pendulum in studio is amazing. Studio wizardry elevates this song and adds a more haunting atmosphere, that particular note especially. It's Ed singing an E4 but with the echo/feedback, it sounds a full octave higher. Very cool effect. As good as the live versions are, they will never live up to the studio rendition but that's ok.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.
