I think the feeling of owing a deep, unabashed musical debt to his heroes *is* Ed being his unique self; I've always felt he was more interested in continuing musical traditions than innovating new ones

Of course...he's always been a torch bearer, in that way...I guess, at some point, the influences just became so much more overt, on a per song basis, instead of blending and reinterpreting them in unique ways. It's dreadfully boring, at this point.

Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard on Riffs, Abandonment, & The Cure’s Influence on Dark Matter

Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s latest album, Dark Matter. The guitarist gives us the inside on the joy and abandonment while making the LP with producer Andrew Watt, how it came together so much quicker than Gigaton, and working in a way they did in the early days of the group. On the guitar side, Gossard tells us how he finds space in a song with the addition of Watt and Josh Klinghoffer in the mix, why we never see him playing back-to-back on stage with Mike McCready, and how his focus is completely different than the lead guitarist. Interestingly, Stone also reveals that The Cure were a very big influence on the album, as well as U2. In fact, with U2 in mind, Gossard tells us why he doesn’t want Pearl Jam to play The Sphere, and then gives his thoughts on The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins deconstruction of “Dark Matter,” and, maybe most excitingly, says that he’d love to PJ to start on a follow up with Watt right away.

I've been saying for a long time (since Backspacer actually) that if they want to go "pop" with a darker edge, they really need to consciously look at The Cure; I didn't really hear that until Earthling ("The Dark") but I look forward to hearing more of it

I don't know where to put Fugazi. Haven't heard enough of them, and mostly listened to them like 30 years ago.
