"Polarity" is so cool, love the sound of that one. The rolling drums and the screeching guitar while the bass holds it down.
Okay, that was fun and very quick. A short album chockfull of ideas. More adventurous than I was expecting. Now if you asked me to hum one of these songs back to you after my first listen I don't think I could; the songs bleed together a bit but I don't think that's necessarily a problem. It invites further listening and I think I will do that. Thanks Trag

Next up: Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation
I don't know a whole lot about this band other than what I saw in the Dig! documentary, and that Anton Newcombe is a bit of a clown. I am expecting very 1970s-inspired scuzzy indie rock.
Let's go

The opening track was really cool -- are those real drums? -- but "What You Isn't" really kicked things up a notch. Love the repeating ... guitar? keyboard? riff... it has such a powerful, commanding sound to it.

I am way into the hazy, plodding desert rock of much of this album. "Memory Camp," "Days Weeks and Months," it's so interesting and textured. I wish I had smoked a joint before listening though. I also appreciate the spooky chanty vocals buried in the background in "Days, Weeks and Months"

Alright I'm back. Listening again
Love the otherworldly sounds in "Duck and Cover" and how they run through the entire song as it transitions through several moods

I also love how well it flows into "Food for Clouds." There's a lot connecting those two songs harmonically

"Second Sighting" is really cool. I really like the glitchy, broken Spanish guitars, what sounds like a Stroh violin, and what sounds like an Andean flute. I wish more bands with vocalists had the balls to include the occasional instrumental track on their albums these days. This idea that music is only worth listening when it has words in it is downright Stipian.

Even the songs that don't really move me from a compositional standpoint ("Memorymix," for example) have enough interesting sounds in them to keep me hooked. A lot of the time I'm wondering what instrument I'm listening to, and through how many layers of distortion
"Fist Full of Bees" is my second favorite right now after "What You Isn't"

"Xibalba" is another really cool, very intriguing track. "Goodbye (Butterfly)" ends the album on an interesting note. Feels a bit too upbeat to be this particular album's closing track. Good song, but I would've placed it elsewhere.
Good album! I really enjoyed it as my first real exposure to BJM. A lot of interesting sounds and textures, very psychedelic. I think I will be coming back to it. Thanks coptheriotact.

Next up, Black Fire by Andrew Hill.
Inspired choice by Doug. I've heard this album before but not for a long while.
Love the little stutters it takes in the first track, like tiny moments of hesitation about where to turn to next.
To Mike: this type of music is often referred to in the jazz world as "post-bop."

Very much enjoying how unusual the drum patterns are. There's a tinge of Latin jazz to how these songs are built.
I really love "Subterfuge." These piano chords are crazy

Gosh, "Cantarnos" is dreamy. I really needed to listen to something like this today.
