I have not, but it's funny you mention it cause as I was searching youtube for that clip I posted, I remembered a friend of mine telling me the exact same thing a few years ago. Is that the version where after the line about Yesterday he sings something like "you probably nicked that one anyway"?durdencommatyler wrote:I LOVE the version of How Do You Sleep? that's on the Lennon Box Set. Have you heard that one, Lament? I prefer to the album version.

(Also, a trip to wikipedia tells me that Ringo Starr was in fact the first narrator of Thomas the Tank Engine...)

Ok, I'll play. That is, if you can be taken away from the fascinating ongoing discussion series with Kevin Davis. But I'm picking my own three (sorry, original darth vedder).stip wrote:how about you pick the 3 songs on that list you think I'd like the most.darth_vedder wrote:Can the non-Beatles fans listen to the following songs and get back to me, mmm-kay?
Baby You're a Rich Man

Run For Your Life
Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!
Fixing A Hole
You Never Give Me Your Money
The End
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
I've Got A Feeling
Don't Let Me Down
We Can Work It Out
Paperback Writer
Don't Bother Me
Across The Universe
Tell Me What You See
Things We Said Today
I'll Follow The Sun
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Yer Blues
Helter Skelter
Two Of Us
For You Blue
----
I know that's a lot of songs, and is a lot to ask, but those are a mixture of known songs and some more obscure ones. To me, those songs are some of the Beatles best work, and that's a very incomplete list. To me, all of the above are pretty brilliant, and I'm leaving off tons of stuff. That is how good this band is.
Ready:
If I Fell
And Your Bird Can Sing
Baby You're a Rich Man
If these don't work, I would say just go and listen to side 2 of Abbey Road. If that doesn't work, where is the nearest cliff I can jump off of?

Oh well. Look, I've tried to have a conversation about my problems with what I'm hearing, but fuck it, some bands can't be criticised. I'll leave you all alone now.

Re: So who here doesn't really like the Beatles
There's a lot of discussion as to what degree this really ended up a Paul McCartney attack piece, although it did gestate as a result of what he felt were the multiple attacks on him found in the Ram album.Anyways, this is one of the John songs that I'm almost always in the mood for. The fact that it's all a pretty vicious put down of Paul McCartney makes it even better.
For example, the sneering comment about blindly listening to his "mother." Obviously, neither of the songwriters had had a mother for some time by this point....but "Mother" was John's nickname for Yoko from day one, and apparently there was some amount of ribbing that went on within the group about this. Plus, one of the primary issues he faced with the other band members was that he was constantly siding with Yoko against them, or just not even considering them once she came into the picture.
There are other examples, but it seems like it's more of a classic case of Lennon's almost mindless and directionless anger propelling him into a situation where he can't even focus it on any one person.
I do like the "but now you're just another day," since Another Day was Paul's single at the time and really was pretty awful.
Let's just say it's more wrong than saying that Infallible's chorus is Christina Aguilara bait, and leave the degree of wrong to future historians to debate.Whether or not it's snarky, is it wrong?

I'm not quite sure how me having done that constitutes us not getting along. It's not imaginary; the reputation of the Beatles' songs as revolutionary is what I am questioning, it's absolutely not "imaginary".durdencommatyler wrote:The cheap shot. Re: So who here doesn't really like the Beatles
The Beatles have a ton of shit that I skip; entire albums that I skip...and songs that I skip on albums that I love. But when they're not doing some goofy bullshit they recorded music that when listening I just think "wow...how could this be put together better than it is" and I'm sure that they're the best thing that's come around.
However...I can see quite easily how someone can be turned off by the poppy stuff at the beginning and ridiculous shit like Maxwell's..., Obladi, Ringo's songs. And Paul and John both have bad habit songs. But they're not the best ever because of all-encompassing perfection in their recording history. Find the shit you dislike (and give as a reason for dismissing them as a whole) and cut that shit out of your life, get it off your iPod, and you'll probably start to feel that they're pretty fucking remarkable.
I've enjoyed this thread a lot cuz I'm good at skipping over the bullshit (of which there's been a lot) and reading through the thoughtful posts. Same applies with the white album.

Re: So who here doesn't really like the Beatles
Much of the Beatles work was revolutionary. You've admitted as much. But once again you're making a snarky, disingenuous comment that implies Beatles fans believe everything John and Paul ever did was automatically revolutionary just because they did it. And we've already talked about that. And it's not true.harmless wrote:I'm not quite sure how me having done that constitutes us not getting along.
