When a batter is 0 for 3, there isn't much faith he'll have many hits later in the game!
While many here would argue that the batter has had at least 1 hit in those three at-bats, what you've described is not really how baseball works. Even Barry Bonds would have 0-3 moments. This is a small sample size problem. What I would say is, look at the career numbers, and look at recent seasons. Did you think that Gigaton (their last season) was good? Do you think that their overall career numbers are good? Finally, are you unwilling to look past their hideous uniforms (the production) to see what they are actually doing on the field?

(apologies for stretching this metaphor past its breaking point)
uniforms ≠ production. To go back to your Mona Lisa analogy, the production is the paint; the compositions are the woman.
eh, not really

I love artful production, it's a gift, but it's not a dealbreaker for me if production is purely functional

No ma'am. The woman and the composition are the idea. Everything else is a tool used for committing the idea to a medium.
composition and "idea" are two completely different things!!

it really sounds to me like you prize production over and above what the band actually did

what the band played was the craft, the painting

making that painting presentable, preservable, and another third p... that's a different craft

craft 2. might be shit, but if I can still see craft 1. through it, I'm happy

for me, performance is like 80% of the product; that means I can tolerate a lot of different production approaches, even if I prefer some over others
