When a batter is 0 for 3, there isn't much faith he'll have many hits later in the game!

While many here would argue that the batter has had at least 1 hit in those three at-bats, what you've described is not really how baseball works. Even Barry Bonds would have 0-3 moments. This is a small sample size problem. What I would say is, look at the career numbers, and look at recent seasons. Did you think that Gigaton (their last season) was good? Do you think that their overall career numbers are good? Finally, are you unwilling to look past their hideous uniforms (the production) to see what they are actually doing on the field?

I think maybe a third of the music I listen to would meet trag's production threshold. I can't imagine not listening to 2/3 of the music I love simply because it could sound better in the hands of another producer, but different strokes...

Riot Act is a great example of production elevating some fairly average songs

I stand by Lightning Bolt having a number of pretty great songs hamstrung by its production.

it's a spice in the mix, but of way lesser importance to me than the quality of the performance and the compositions.

He is a hipster. While he enjoyed the PJ show I took him to when he was like 14, I don't think they are on his radar and I'm not going to ask him to listen to it until I have the whole album in some kind of decent (for what it is) format.

Do you find that you're able to separate how a song sounds from what it is? The choices the band makes with how a song is presented, from guitar pedals to how Eddie sings something, are all part of the performance and composition. I get that production and mixing is its own art, but I don't really feel like it's so easy to bifurcate a song's composition from its sonics (at least for a rock band like PJ, which isn't really aiming to write standards that are meant to exist outside of the band)

what does this mean?

I'm imperfectly describing how music used to be, in which songs were written and distributed as sheet music and meant to be played by others. PJ isn't writing standards, for lack of a better term.
