It's gonna be a pretty steep hill, given the way it's been discussed.

Is the expectation the equivalent of an unreleased five-star gem from the 1990-1993 era, at this point?
Are we going to be disappointed if it's any less than that?

We're a smart bunch around here. I'd like to think we can hear this while adjusting for age, time, and reality.

I don't know. I'm as guilty as anyone of getting swept up in the hype.
Even Stone said “it sounds like a hit” so I’m interested to see where this goes.

This didn't end well for Inside Job when it got similar pre-release praise, if I remember correctly.

Oh, snap...Damn it
Why you hadda go and put a pin in the balloon??
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I do as well. But it got labeled as the next great anthemic hit by the reviews, then a lot of people hated it when it finally arrived.

It’s still one of the highlights on that record and a favorite album closer for me

It's all there musically and vocally, just a matter of how one feels about the lyrics.

I enjoy the song a lot, as well, but, yeah, I get what Ruddo is saying.

The pre-release hype made it sound like a monumental achievement on par with Hotel California & Stairway to Heaven, obviously causing a lot of misguided blowback on what amounts to a pretty decent song.

The riff in the second part could have been a bit more interesting and Jeff’s part should have been given a lot more prominence, too.

A song that never reached its full potential, but a good one nevertheless.

I've been thinking about Inside Job a lot lately and how there's no other closer in the catalogue that aims/reaches that high. I love my dark and dour PJ, but there's something great about ending an album with a surge like that. It's why I had been hoping the Got To Give clip from the metal door leak ("I'll be the last one standing...") was actually Setting Sun, and that this album might also be surging and soaring in its final moments, too.

Sounds like there's a chance Setting Sun is sort of doing that anyway, but probably not with as much intensity.

I'm really hoping they scale similar heights. Inside Job was a little too claustrophobic. It needed a stronger "burst through the clouds" moment, imo.

I just listened to Inside Job.
Is a gem.

Would have fit well on Yield, btw.

that one has come around for me a lot in recent years. It is a bit of an outlier on S/T. It is pretty great live

The Bends the song or the album?
It’s unclear.
Because while the song is so-so, the album as a whole is great.
I’d say that is a very flattering comparison.

What are the odds, in either case, Val?
