I guess I insulted his identity as a washed up producer

I don’t own anything that could play a cd, but I bought the cd anyways because I can’t imagine not having a PJ album that is not in a physical cd form.

I think something like Dark Matter, if they approached it how they recorded something like Riot Act, it would benefit tremendously; you'd actually get the sound of what I presume the band wants to evoke, of the aggressiveness in the playing and the feeling of a live band coming close to careening off the tracks. As it is, these songs sound more neutered than they should, I think they'd benefit from some actual sharp edges.

I think that when PJ retires I'm going to purchase every album on CD, and they will be the only CDs I own

I'm new to posting here, and this may sound crazy, but I've actually never listened to any leaked copies of any album. For context, Binaural was the first album of Pearl Jam's where I was waiting for the release date. I understand where people are coming from with issues with the production. Me not wanting to listen to a leaked copy is a separate thing from whether or not the production is good or bad. Maybe it's true that we're talking about degrees of shit, but I want to decide what degree is acceptable for me, without being told I'm wrong about it.

The Gigaton leak was pretty solid quality, from what I remember. Avocado was not, but that was years ago. Don't remember the other two.

Nothing about Riot Act screams sharp edges or aggression to me. That was the whole critique of the album at the time, and I think it holds up as critique. It's just that after S/T came out we stopped looking for those moments in Riot Act and understood it wasn't what the album was trying to evoke.

Gigaton was a FLAC file. I think the first 7 songs of Lightning Bolt leaked because the were on MLB Playoffs promotional disc. Can't remember Backspacer.

Vitalogy was the first album where I had access to a sub par copy before the formal release. I played it incessantly for about a week, and it was pretty cool hearing the actual album for the first time. There was extra clarity in the music that felt like a discovery, like hearing the song for the first time a second time. I kind of like that about leaked quality music.

was there a full Backspacer or S/T leak? Gigaton has those verizon snippets, and S/T had the rough mixes of about half the record (including the essential no fade Life Wasted_)

That S/T rough mix leaked like 6 weeks in advance.

I respect that and I get what you're saying. For me, since it's so close to the 19th, I'm good with waiting.

Yeah, those things aren't there because that's how the band (and particularly Eddie) were approaching the songwriting and particularly the performances on that album, and the production evocatively (and accurately) caught what the band was doing. Kasper caught how they sounded in that moment as clearly as they ever have been. If they approached these songs with the intensity I'd assume they're aiming for, and tried to capture that mood as well as they captured the mood they caught with Riot Act, I'd think they'd sound a whole lot better then trying to add in a lot of volume and distortion after the fact.

Yeah, those things aren't there because that's how the band (and particularly Eddie) were approaching the songwriting and particularly the performances on that album, and the production evocatively (and accurately) caught what the band was doing. Kasper caught precisely what the band was doing and how they sounded as good as they ever have been. If they approached these songs with that same intensity and tried to capture that mood as well as they captured the mood they caught with Riot Act, I'd think they'd sound a whole lot better.
Ah, gotcha. I see what you mean. It'll be interesting to see how much different the Evans mix sounds. But I don't know. For Dark Matter in particular I think there is a relentless intensity to it. It's overwhelming, but that's kind of the point. It may not work for every track, but this is one where I think it does, quite well. Of course a different approach might have sounded even better.

I think Vs. like production would be perfect. Animal/Go/Blood have that intense sound that would fit Dark Matter/Running perfectly and the mid tempo stuff would also work perfectly with a sound like Daughter/Elderly Woman
