Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
I usually listen to the first 6 tracks on Gigaton then lose interest during the back half. The biggest difference between Gig and DM is that, on DM, you are more likely to be rewarded by listening to the end.

Over time, I think the biggest difference between Gigaton and DM will be the translation to live shows.
Gig is a studio album IMO, DM is a live album.
Many DM songs soar into Betterman/Alive type jam endings ripe for improv and fresh tags to be applied by Ed.

My memory sucks but i vaguely remember reading in some of the interviews around its release that Josh Evans had kind of envisioned Retrograde as the albums closer but that when Ed came in with River Cross they kind of had to put it there. Personally im happy the way it is, love River Cross. If anything i would take out ND and TTLW and sub in Get It Back.EBowie wrote:I really really like Gigaton but there's a couple issues I have with it. The album ending with essentially 3 slow songs in a row being the biggest. Comes Then Goes, Retrograde and River Cross are a slog all back to back. I would ditch the last 2 and just end the album on Comes Then Goes.

It's been so long since I let my freak flag fly, I don't know what my wife will say when I suggest I go hear the new PJ album by myself at a theater tonight.....but I'm gonna do just that!

I hear ya but the problem with taking out ND and TTLW is the album already is pretty skimpy on fast/hard songs imo.Thurman Murman wrote:My memory sucks but i vaguely remember reading in some of the interviews around its release that Josh Evans had kind of envisioned Retrograde as the albums closer but that when Ed came in with River Cross they kind of had to put it there. One of my favorite things about setting Sun is the not resolving the final chord progression. My ears want that third chord, but it never comes and it works so perfectly.

Noticed this as well. I wonder if it was a conscious choice or if it just happened in the moment when the song was first written and arranged.Django Butterworth wrote:One of my favorite things about setting Sun is the not resolving the final chord progression. Excited to hear Setting Sun in the theater vs. iPhone leak.
Still love crying baby, though.

Or perhaps add in Get It Back to break it up a bit...EBowie wrote:I really really like Gigaton but there's a couple issues I have with it. I wasn't paying attention - what was the RM consensus on Get It Back?

I thought it was an interesting song with a classic Pearl Jam outro. 3.5 stars.Juvenal wrote:Or perhaps add in Get It Back to break it up a bit...EBowie wrote:I really really like Gigaton but there's a couple issues I have with it. Reminds me of Riot Act... it would have worked nicely on Gigaton

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…
