Re: Upper Hand
Is it just me or is this the same melody as Rocket Man by Elton John in the chorus?

Throwing out this thought, but Upper Hand could have worked well as the closer

Re: Upper Hand
The outro took me by surprise, too.
I'll get used to it, I guess.

This song starts with one of my favourite lines by Ed: "The distance to the end is closer now than it's ever been".
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

Re: Upper Hand
It's one of my favorite parts in the song, Eddie sounds great along with Mike. I don't recall if it's this song or Won't Tell but I also hear a little Strokes 'Trying Your Luck' guitar riff that I adore.injuddstree wrote:Not just you.oftheearth wrote:Is it just me or is this the same melody as Rocket Man by Elton John in the chorus?

Overall, probably the best constructed track on the album. I'd be unsurprised if this is an Ament number.
It has the patience to develop and lacks the rushed nature of an Ed song. I enjoyed it.

Re: Upper Hand
at first I wasn't sure about that jammy outro; it seemed a bit much for the chilled bluesy nature of the song, and at odds with the synthy intro; but then I realised that the song itself is essentially an ode to 70's prog, and those three disparate parts are nods to three different elements of that sound: synthy ambience, slow Cready blues, Elton John-style piano jam

Hearing Cold Confession-esque inflections from Ed here. That's a good thing.

Re: Upper Hand
Another very cool song. Though the intro was like 20-30% too long imo. A bit disjointed but I like the pieces a lot. Though it was another Eddie chorus that surprised me lyrically. I’m confused where his head is at on this album. It’s not the Eddie I expected from gigaton.

Favorite song. Hands down. Best thing on the album.
The atmospheric opening is so good.
Is that Stone on the guitar solo? I loved that too.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Spiraling guitar outro with Ed's climb vocal is a lift off to the heavens. Best Ed has sounded in a long time. His vocal inflection here is stunning.

Outtro reminds me of Marker In The Sand outtro, which is one of the better moments on Avocado.
