Really love most of the album, my biggest complaint is how it tails off at the end. Up through Swallowed Whole everything is really good, but the last 4 tracks...

Yellow Moon is good and LTRP is fun for what it is (would be better without the poppy chorus), but the back end of the album is really missing another song. Future Days is tolerable between the garbage BoB shit and SBM is fine, but out of place on the album. It would of worked better as a "hidden track" at the end I think.

Basically I'd drop FD altogether, use Yellow Moon > SBM as the closer and find another track in the 10 spot.

Overall, pretty damn happy with the album. I hope it's a commercial success so that PJ can move on from this desire they seem to have to be relevant again. Get rid of BoB and stop trying to make the next hit single with every song.

I noticed the album was dedicated to Uncle Neil? (and well with 300 pages of posts? good luck finding if it was discussed)
anyone hear any reasons behind it?

I was just talking to a friend last week about Sirens, and mentioned how Neils gone in so many different directions... you can skip a few releases then he comes back with la Noise and the last one with the Horse... so id be okay with PJ going in a new direction for an album, as it could give them a break from the hard stuff / recharge / come back stronger...
and this album definitely has some love songs... then I see its dedicated to NY. and after really listening, Pendulum's opening sounds A LOT like something off of La Noise, and Future Days is almost like a Harvest Moon / Heart of Gold song (not as good as those... but its PJ doing something from the heart, that you wouldnt expect)

So I could almost see EV writing that song... saying he really liked it but couldnt see releasing it with PJ... and Uncle Neil punching him in the face saying "fuck em... release what ya want with who ya want, its your music"

has there been any word why they dedicated it to NY? in any of the interviews theyve done? just curious

Maybe they're in love with Neil Young.

I'm sure we will get expert knowledge on this as the vinyl gets around, but I played mine for the first time today and it sounds AMAZING. We all know the deal with Backspacer's mastering, but it sure sounds like LB was mastered for vinyl. The range, depth and warmth are all there.

Pendulum>Swallowed Whole on vinyl..... :heartbeat:

Not to mention Yellow Moon.

You are all in for a treat.

This album has taken me by surprise, and is difficult to file with other albums they have done in the past (which I think is a good thing). I think they should release Getaway as the next single, and I thought Sirens would have the potential to break into mainstream radio, although it is now not looking likely.

While my reaction to this album is overall positive, it would have been nice to have one or two more rockers, and maybe pendulum to open the record like its opening their concerts. Sleeping by myself would have made a nice b-side, and the piano on future days is a mis-step IMO.

Look forward to seeing them at the BDO!

sleeping by myself is a great song, and people should get over the fact that it was on uke songs.

This album has lead me back to Riot Act. I love Riot Act so, so much. Sonically it's surprising how much it reminds me of Lightning Bolt. The fuzzy guitars, the delay often on Mike's guitar, shakers and tambourines added to the percussion, and the more laid-back grooves from Matt. The sound palette has a real similarity, even if the musical intention and approach isn't quite the same. Lightning Bolt is a brighter record, but I'm glad to hear this thread from an older record running through it.

I think starting this week I'm gonna just move LB into regular rotation and see how it stacks up with older records

I'm still enjoying the heck out of this record :luv:
I'm not sure where to place it if comparing it to the older records though. Most likely above Backspacer, maybe above Self Titled. I think it might be (in my opinion) the best album since Binaural.

Yesterday my 2 year old son was singing the "it's oooookey" part of Getaway :)

I was thinking about making a good sized play list for the same reason. I might work on putting it together tonight and start listening to it next week

Having seen half the record live the disconnect between BoB's aesthetic and the live approach (which in some ways is probably the most authentic pearl jam) becomes much more readily apparent. I have no real issues with how the lightning bolt songs sound on the record. Minor quibbles here or there but I'd have them on any record. But a lot of what BoB adds, or the way he help shapes the songs, kinda pushes against how pearl jam interprets them in concert. There is a harder edge, a dirtier edge, a more rough and ready quality to them. I don't actually mind that the studio and live versions feel different, since now we have them both. And I generally prefer the studio takes, but I think that's because they're studio. Hearing them live made me wish there was the attempt to record the live take in the studio.

There are exceptions. Yellow Moon is one. The stripped down live take, while good, is inferior to the record.

Yep probably and a tour bump too. What are the parentheses numbers?
