CDs actually arrived yesterday.

My vinyl hasn't left Fife, WA, but it will arrive tomorrow.

A couple of noticings after listening to the album again.

While this album is better listened to beginning to end, and the individual songs are elevated by listening in that way, the two singles Dark matter and Running are two that work better than others listened to independently. I think they knew what they were doing when they selected them as singles because they can fit well into random rock playslists.

I think I’m enjoying running more than dark matter. Running is so damn fun where it fits on the album. I can’t believe I don’t really notice this before, but the part at the beginning of the bridge, where Eddie sings “take off” and Jeff plays that slide down the bass, the whole band drops out for a second, and the sound of that bass with “take off” gives a sense of floating in space, and it’s such a brilliant deliberate choice, right before Matt’s drums kick back in and bring it all back down to earth.

The chorus and harmonies of something special are lovely. I’m still irked by the clunky line “not cause it’s my job”, and it probably could have used one less verse, but it is a lovely song in the context of the album. I too am happy to eat crow on this one.

There are still so many individual lyrics that feel like Eddie is talking about something or someone specific, especially when he genders the thing or person he is talking about.
