Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
Hey there everybody! I’m out without the kids tonight(never happens) about 4 drinks in. At a bar listening to crap music. About to go take the DJ reigns and put DM on. Jk. Hope y’all all having a good night!

That’s kind of what I’ve said all along. And it’s highly subjective.Strat wrote:Lol guys are really wrapped up in Spotify EQ settings as if there is some magic setting that is gonna change everything.
Guys, the record is mixed the way it is mixed, the stuff you do on your streaming platforms will make minor changes to the overall thing. Just start messing with it yourselves until you find something you like. Its no different than going up to your receiver and changing the treble, bass, etc...
No reason to fuss.
It’s not a magic bullet for bad mixing etc, but it can accentuate or pull back part of the spectrum based on what you like, and I do think one can improve upon the default settings by tweaking on their own.
Thats about it. Which is why I thought it was odd that anyone would de so desperate to see my settings. Little old me. What do I know?

The only thing, i think, they really do is....how much low end do you want? More or less? Thats about itBirds in Hell wrote:I'm genuinely surprised anyone uses EQ settings, especially pre-sets.
There's almost no way they're going to do anything helpful.

I tried to find who posted this sentiment to give credit - there is no trying to convince myself to like any of these songs. They’re all so easy to like. That’s a first for me since Vitalogy.

I can see using a very modest bass boost if something's a bit lacking.Strat wrote:The only thing, i think, they really do is....how much low end do you want? More or less? Thats about itBirds in Hell wrote:I'm genuinely surprised anyone uses EQ settings, especially pre-sets.

But those presets are making sweeping EQ changes that affect the whole sound, I can't believe they sound any good compared to just leaving it flat.

Unbelievable to think Upper Hand WFS and Setting Sun have a higher percentage of 5 star votes than elderly evenflow Gtf . They are three highest rated 94 92 and 92 5 star votes. Crazy

Listened to the Ten Club vinyl on my ok turntable with my Benz Micro Glider SL and NAD amplifier in my Sennheiser headphones and it was wonderful. The mix is still not perfect but it is far better than anything else I’ve heard, and there were many aspects I noticed that I hadn’t before, like the dueling guitars in each channel in Won’t Tell. Such a beautiful album. Feeling extraordinarily grateful.

I can't get the hype around Setting Sun.Tj wrote:Unbelievable to think Upper Hand WFS and Setting Sun have a higher percentage of 5 star votes than elderly evenflow Gtf . They are three highest rated 94 92 and 92 5 star votes. Crazy
The finish is beautiful, but the first part is mundane.

It's a very good song. But as an album closer it becomes excellent.DeeDee wrote:I can't get the hype around Setting Sun.Tj wrote:Unbelievable to think Upper Hand WFS and Setting Sun have a higher percentage of 5 star votes than elderly evenflow Gtf . Got to Give is gonna be a tough one for Ed to sing so I don't think that'll get much play. Same for Dark Matter.Matters wrote:Which song (if any) from DM is going to be a live rarity? My guess would be Something Special but I have a feeling they’re gonna play them all, hopefully even the mighty humble bit.

It’s only a week.
I give it 12 more days before the tide turns and RM does its thing and turns on this thing and starts tearing it apart.
We’re kinda known for that

I won’t be tearing it apart but I did put it down for a week so far just to keep myself from getting sick of it.dimejinky99 wrote:It’s only a week.

i finally got an apple music subscription. listening to DM on apple music - the atmos mix using air pods with spatial audio active. can hear some things more clearly, but other things just drop out. one of the guitars is almost inaudible at the start of dark matter

Don't see myself tearing it down any time soon. If anything, I've grown to appreciate certain elements even more.
That said, I haven't over-listened, either. Trying to keep it somewhat fresh.

That's great. We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

If anything this album just continues to grow for me....Got To Give and React, Respond are pushing hard to join the 5* club which would legitimately push this album into that untouchables territory reserved for the bands first four albums.

Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
need more than one listen. since im still in the discovery phase in general and have hardly absorbed all the details in the songs right now it may mute the impact. I THINK I prefer the spotify mix best so far tbh. still havent been able to hear the actual cd or blu ray.oneway23 wrote:Don't see myself tearing it down any time soon. in general the atmos mix (of which i am experiencing an imperfect spatial audio translation) the drums and eddie are forward at the expense of the guitars, which, for my preferences, is a lesser trade off - though together they give a fuller composite picture of the album. it’s annoying that this is what it takes.
got to give is the only song that felt definitvely enhanced by atmos. that was great

Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
I think for me, what's keeping this as a PRAMG album and not an all-timer is:
1. pop production: unlike some here I don't consider it "bad", it's a choice, but it also doesn't really reflect the band pre-MG
2. not enough darkness / weirdness: yes it's there in the lyrics, but musically, React / Respond is the only real nod to the unfriendly; the rest is a pretty straight up (though excellent) classic rock album
I had a 3 but I've forgotten it
so I love this album, I consider it a late career miracle alongside Gigaton, but I couldn't rank it like 4 or 5 in the catalogue like some are doing
