I thought this was freaking amazing until I got to the chorus, where it seemed to still be a little overcooked. That approach actually works for Binaural, but I think for DM (album) clarity would be ideal. Especially with how incredible Jeff's tracks sound. For DM the song, there were distinct sections in each that I preferred over the other, so no clear winner.

Intro sounds more ominous in a good way. Pool ball is muted (but that's okay).

This sounds great at the start. The music is really sharp. Huge. Eddie is getting lost in the chorus and it loses the thread a bit. Second verse sounds great. Issue persists in the second chorus - its like the wrong stuff is emphasized. The background vocals are more prominent than the main vocals. Mike's first solo is really prominent and the wailing bits linger longer in a good way. The ghostly echo in the bridge is good. Mike sounds great coming right out of the bridge, but I feel like towards the end I am still losing some specificity.

What does it mean to use a song as a reference track? That seems like an odder choice for Scared of Fear in terms of fear (as opposed to Dark Matter, which feels like it has more shared DNA, at least to me). What if you used Who Ever Said (I ask not knowing what that means - just reaching for songs with a similar feel)?

tragabigzanda wrote: Alright guys, I'm soliciting some feedback here. I'm using two different mastering algorithms. Any thoughts on which we prefer? Both are converted to low bitrate MP3s for ease of hosting; I promise the WAVs sound much better.

Algorithm #1 is 10db of dynamic range:

Algorithm #2 defaulted to 7db of dynamic range based on a Riot Act reference track. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T LET THE LOUDER VOLUME TRICK YOU INTO THINKING IT SOUNDS BETTER. I can dial back back the limiting on this so it has the same EQ and imaging profile, but with a broader dynamic range.

I have no idea what all the technical stuff means, and I just briefly checked out the two clips and the second one sounded better to me at first glance.

I'll listen to the full songs properly and share thoughts.

Both sound good though! Ed's vocals are much clearer.
I also preferred the second version on first listen.

Just trust your ears & your gut, Trag.
Make it the way you'd want to hear it, and hope other people like it.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Huh, I actually like Dark Matter quite a bit more when I'm not assaulted by drums
