What kinds of songs, for example?
Songs like the other hard rock songs on the album.

Doesn't remind me of FON at all... Does remind me of The Cure.

Actually... read that wrong. The bridge reminds me of Joshua Tree U2 and the end of the song reminds me of The Cure.

According to MC, there are a handful of other songs (not sure how developed) from the sessions. Wottman wanted them to pare things down for the record to only the best, so maybe we will get some b sides?

Honestly, that's not far off.
It never ceases to amaze me how 2 different sets of ears can hear such completely different things when it comes to music - especially Pearl Jam's music

To my ears, there's not a single song on Dark Matter that remotely resembles the overwrought ham fisted steaming hot turd of song that is Force of Nature.
The songs on Dark Matter lyrically and musically easily rise above & soar past anything that was even attempted on Backspacer

Dark Matter is a far superior album to Backspacer & Lightning Bolt

But then again...that's just my ears & my opinion

It’s fun to go back to the metal door leak now after listening to the record many times, especially when i think about what I thought the songs would sound like back then. A part of me wishes the album sounded ‘heavier’ as originally described. Scared of Fear sounds way heavier on the door leak thanks to the intensity of the bass, crap quality, and loudness, but it gives the impression of much heavier sounding guitars; more like dark matter. The only two songs that have ‘heavy’ sounding guitars are dark matter and running. It would have been cool if there was more of that on the album.

at this time

5 Stars: Scared of Fear, Waiting for Stevie
4.5 stars: Dark Matter, Setting Sun, Wreckage
4 Stars: R/R, Wont Tell Upper Hand, Running, Got to Give, Something Special

things may dip but there is no pearl jam album for me where everything gets 4+ stars (Vitalogy if you just count the 4 core tracks)

Alright...this will definitely change but as of today

5 Star
Waiting For Stevie
Setting Sun
Upper Hand
Wreckage

4 Star
Scared of Fear
React/Respond
Got To Give
Won't Tell

3 Star
Running
Dark Matter
Something Special

Waiting for Stevie, Wreckage, & Upper Hand are approaching top tier songs for me that I feel will eventually stand shoulder to shoulder with any of my favorite songs in their catalog

Well, you like Dark Matter a whole lot more than I do. But to be clear, I didn't really mean to say that the songs sound like "Force of Nature," or are of the same quality; more that they display a similar approach to melody, arrangements and lyrics.

Awesome Hypnos, thanks!
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…
