There's been some related posts in "The Protest Thread". Not sure if it needs a separate thread as it might tie into some craziness at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.dimejinky99 wrote:Should we start a separate thread about the protests on US college campuses?
The bloody simpletons probably deserve what’s coming to them right? This one’s gonna from legs and have consequences I feel we should start a new thread

The agreement with the Northwestern Divestment Coalition, which Northwestern President Michael Schill announced in a campuswide email, requires the immediate removal of tents and sound systems, as well as a commitment that all protesters will adhere to university policies.
In return, demonstrations can continue on the meadow through June 1. Only students and university staff may participate in the protests, according to the deal posted on the university’s website.
The university has also agreed to fund two visiting Palestinian faculty members each year and provide scholarships for five Palestinian undergraduates throughout their undergraduate careers. It will also provide and renovate a community building that can be used as a gathering space for Middle Eastern, North African and Muslim students.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

University of Chicago put out a good statement explaining their speech policy and how encampments violated it, but then said they would allow one temporarily because the students feel so strongly about this issue.

I'm having trouble caring one way or another about this.
Goofy and ineffectual protestors disrupting corrupt universities over some bullshit between two factions that are more trouble than they're worth fighting halfway around the world?
I just hope everyone has fun. Good luck to everyone involved.

It is very irritating to hear that a majority of the protesters on campus aren't even students or local to the campus. I know that is the culture now, but professional protesters piss me off.

Is this statement specific to one place? Or is it widespread?E.H. Ruddock wrote:a majority of the protesters on campus aren't even students or local to the campus.
I admit I’m not really following this topic. My college campus once had to close down because people couldn’t handle losing a football game, so protests on campuses are not something I’m sweating over.
I’ve only read two articles. One was about 50 people getting arrested at Yale (44 of them students), and the other profiled a student at the University of Texas Austin who was arrested there last week, and was now waiting outside Travis County Jail to pick up a student friend who had been arrested in the days since.

I know Columbia said there were more non-students than students. And my stepdaughter is at UNC and said all of the ID checks at the sit-in there are resulting in a bunch of people getting thrown off campus for not being a student.McParadigm wrote:Is this statement specific to one place? Weird, then, that Columbia’s big negotiation offer was to say protesters would be allowed to finish the semester if they stood down.E.H. Re: The Protest Thread
There’s no need. I believe you. And I would expect that non-students would join the protests (possibly in large numbers), because that’s where the fucking protest is happening, man. You’re not going to start a six person party on the corner of Sidestreet and Grande, when everything is already happening just over there on campus.
And I’m sure there’s a lot of outreach being done by protest organizers to concentrate things, as well.
The only thing that caught my curiosity was that you use the word “majority.“

Re: The Protest Thread
Why? I've always thought that the "outside agitator" rhetoric is mostly an attempt by local authorities to delegitimize a protest and to act like they're right to shut it down because it doesn't represent our community/school/whatever anyway. 'It's those "others," those troublemakers from down the road coming into our community and disturbing us. Real [us] would never act like that.'E.H. Re: The Protest Thread
Define professional protestor. I am what one would call a townie. If I went up to UNC to join the encampment because I agreed with the students, I'd get thrown off campus for not being a student, but I wouldn't be there because someone paid me. I'm not a professional. I'm just a non-student joining the cause.E.H. Ruddock wrote:It is very irritating to hear that a majority of the protesters on campus aren't even students or local to the campus. Of course, I could go stand here, just across the street from campus, all I want and protest. I doubt the Town would allow a tent, but I can stay there as long as I want and take breaks for food and sleep.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Re: The Protest Thread
On the one hand, there's limited value in trying to suss out what's 'spontaneous' and 'organic' or not. On the other hand, 'protest consultant' is apparently a job title.
Of the past 20 years, what have the main results of campus protests been other than more administrative positions for graduates? Is this going to be different?

Re: The Protest Thread
IIRC there was a video from right outside Columbia of protestors shouting "burn Tel Aviv to the ground" or some similar mostly peaceful thing and several media outlets incorrectly indicated it was students on campus... perhaps that?McParadigm wrote:Weird, then, that Columbia’s big negotiation offer was to say protesters would be allowed to finish the semester if they stood down.E.H.
