I feel like the only thing they need to make it perfect is actually just to remove the Dark Matter song completely, and just go from Wreckage to Won't Tell and replace it with nothing.

I do agree it would be too light on rockers ,so the last thing you want to do is remove a rocker. But Dark Matter IMO just does not fit, thematically, musically, or in any way. And making the album a bit shorter isn't necessarily a bad thing. And hey, it would make Running stand out even more than it does. I think Dark Matter just sorta...distracts, and waters down the album a bit. It sounds remarkably cohesive but this is the one black spot in its cohesion

I have to overrule this on the technicality that it was neither written by nor ever performed by Pete Seeger. Or even Bob Seger. Or even a segway with an iPod. Fold the continent all you want, this song is a dud in the northeast, northwest, southern south southwest, or lower upper appalachia.

I just still don't like Matt's snare sound preference, even without any processing

I'm asking this as a non-drummer, so forgive me if it sounds like a dumb question, but is this due to equipment choice, or playing style?

“Leatherman” has many admirers around here, I think. I am certainly one.

That was such a great interview, great seeing the tour through the headquarters.
That place will be a museum someday

But for now, the band seems collectively more energized and excited about this album then I've ever seen them; especially Stone & Jeff.
Feels like Dark Matter has ignited a new fire in the band and that they're happier then ever to be in this band.

Haven't seen them this happy since their first record.

As for Leatherman
Check out the version from Barrie 1998 - if you haven't already

That version turned it from a Meh...to a fuck yeah!!

I'm not good at talking equipment, metal snares vs. wooden snares etc. but for me it's mainly the tuning: the snare that you hear Matt hitting in this interview is loose, "fat", deep (really all words for the same thing but I'm trying to give you a full picture), with a long decay / ring / snare rattle; I like my snare tightly wound, high pitched, a whip-crack; think the snare on "Go", "Blood", RVM, or, for another band, Deftones "My Own Summer"; just take a drum key to that thing and wind it up! I don't want a long ppffffft, I want a THWAK; I think tinny and high pitched works really well for the faster songs in particular; I think playing a song like Running or React / Respond with a fat snare makes it sound lazier, more dragged along instead of speeding, even though that's technically an illusion

fwiw Ruddo, Trag would probably disagree with every word of this so it is all subjective, and I don't *always* hate Matt's snare approach; it really worked for Riot Act's more cold, downbeat vibe; "Can't Keep" and "Ghost" sound really good with a fat snare

I'm almost halfway through and he hasn't spoken at all?? He looks like I'm sure I look in staff meetings where people are talking about how good things are going on their teams and I've just review the metrics to know how full of shit they are. Not that he thinks the band is full of shit, but he doesn't look like he's having his best day at the office.

All joking and memery aside, would you say this is an example of the snare sound you favor? https://voca.ro/12XytBARsVRl
