Re: Apple Atmos
I have Apple Music, but turned Atmos off. I'm usually listening to music via my external JBL speakers. They're really old and still plug in via USB, so I don't think Atmos is for me yet. I have been thinking of getting a HomePod for the kitchen and those support Atmos (currently have an old HK Onyx there).

Re: Apple Atmos
I've also turned Atmos off in Amazon Music; where Dark Matter is concerned, it was making the melodic tracks lovely and nuanced, but the rhythmic ones, especially the drums, very distant and buried under guitars; Pearl Jam has always been a drum-forward band for me, so for better and worse, I have to admit I'll take "pop" drum sounds over distant drums

I'm generally with you, and want to hear Matt in all of his glory.Ms Harmless wrote:I've also turned Atmos off in Amazon Music; where Dark Matter is concerned, it was making the melodic tracks lovely and nuanced, but the rhythmic ones, especially the drums, very distant and buried under guitars; Pearl Jam has always been a drum-forward band for me, so for better and worse, I have to admit I'll take "pop" drum sounds over distant drums
Off topic somewhat, but I suppose that's probably why I prefer the Ten Redux... I hear way more of Dave K. and like hearing the drums "pop" more on Ten.

I need to listen to that again, I'm still very attached to the original Ten for nostalgia reasons, even in all of its retro 80s/90s cusp glorydarth_vedder wrote:I'm generally with you, and want to hear Matt in all of his glory.Ms Harmless wrote:I've also turned Atmos off in Amazon Music; where Dark Matter is concerned, it was making the melodic tracks lovely and nuanced, but the rhythmic ones, especially the drums, very distant and buried under guitars; Pearl Jam has always been a drum-forward band for me, so for better and worse, I have to admit I'll take "pop" drum sounds over distant drums

Re: Apple Atmos
Most seem for prefer the original for that fluid and ambient sound it has. The Redux is a little more like Vs. and just hits harder. I can see why people don't like that, especially those that have Ten as their favorite.Ms Harmless wrote:I need to listen to that again, I'm still very attached to the original Ten for nostalgia reasons, even in all of its retro 80s/90s cusp glorydarth_vedder wrote:I'm generally with you, and want to hear Matt in all of his glory.Ms Harmless wrote:I've also turned Atmos off in Amazon Music; where Dark Matter is concerned, it was making the melodic tracks lovely and nuanced, but the rhythmic ones, especially the drums, very distant and buried under guitars; Pearl Jam has always been a drum-forward band for me, so for better and worse, I have to admit I'll take "pop" drum sounds over distant drums

Re: Apple Atmos
i think the remixes serve the harder songs well but flatten out the expansiveness that is part of the character of songs like release and oceans. the reverb is a feature, not a bug

Yeah, on my most recent listen I tried the remix but switched back pretty quickly. It may just be nostalgia talking, but I do feel like Ten benefits from the murk, even if it also dates it in a way their other records aren't.

Re: Apple Atmos
The piano during the chorus of Black is slightly clearer on the redux and I much prefer it.
Are the RVM mixes different from the Redux versions?? How did I miss that.

Re: Apple Atmos
My appreciation of the “Spatial Audio” experience varies quite widely. Sometimes song to song. Sometimes within a single song.
At its worst it can be a distraction and just a plain old inferior mix than the version you’re used to. When done well (which usually means not too extreme) it can be wonderful (Listen to whichever song you want from the Deluxe Edition of Stop Making Sense and tell me that’s not the greatest thing you’ve ever heard)
Even when it’s a distraction, like Stip said, it can be an interesting tool to pull apart all the elements of a song you’ve heard a million times and look around at all the components you didn’t necessarily notice were there.
That being said, most of the time I have it turned off

Re: Apple Atmos
Wow, the Gigaton Atmos mix is not good. It's basically Eddie and everything else is disconnected and far behind him (Eddie sounds great, though). This is brutal on the guitars.

Re: Apple Atmos
I'm almost through. This is really a showcase for how good Eddie sounded on Gigaton. And it's weird, since one of the things we all liked about Gigaton after Lightning Bolt was that he seemed a little further back/seemed like more of a band affair at least in terms of the mixing if not the writing (am I remembering that correctly)?

Re: Apple Atmos
Ohhh, I should note that Comes then Goes actually sounds BETTER than Gigaton. A little more intimate, and the distant guitar makes the whole piece feel a little more thoughtful and pensive.

Final addendum. River Cross is also greatly improved. It comes across as much less busy and centers the weary beauty in Eddie's voice

Re: Apple Atmos
Interesting thoughts about Gigaton, stip...Believe we've spoken about this, but, it was the first record Josh Evans had ever done in the format, prior to learning and working under Nick Rivas.
He didn't even know what the format was until the band personally requested it.
Definitely far from a demo disc, but, he's grown leaps and bounds since then. Everyone is still learning.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…
