Re: MM F6: Setting Sun vs. Brain of J
Brain of J is great. 5 stars. But Setting Sun can absolutely go toe-to-toe with it.
Stars being equal, I tend to gravitate toward Pearl Jam's big set-piece type songs than quick rockers, however great one may be.

Based on the length of their current tours and their commitment to setlist variation, it seems unlikely that any song will build up a live presence the way songs used to in the days of 70-plus-date tours when the songbook was half the size it is now.stip wrote:Very few recent songs have built up a presence in the live shows that help elevate their status. I think Setting Sun could endure.
That said, I didn't mean to suggest with my comment that the song wouldn't have enduring appeal, just that it seems extremely unlikely to me that it's going to turn out to be Sweet 16 material when all is said and done. Right now seeing it alongside "Brain of J," "Corduroy," etc., feels a bit like Christian Laettner on the 1992 USA Dream Team.
Is "Insignficance" the most recently released song to win a March Madness? What is the farthest a song newer than that has made it?

And another that still under performs dramatically in these MM tournaments.RockPusher wrote:I’ll allow it. Again though, that’s an all-timer for many fans.epilogue wrote:Hard To Imagine, for one.RockPusher wrote:“A song like ‘Setting Sun’”? What song of theirs is like Setting Sun?

That's an abnorman question as keeper of the stats, but it's the most recent winner.
Honestly it may well be Cropduster. Or All or None?

I am absolutely blown away by the (almost) universal love and appreciation on this board for the new album. It really makes my heart so happy to see the joy and praise. RM hasn't been this united and positive is fucking forever. I know it'll have to end eventually but I want to ride that wave for as long as possible.
Having said that... I'm not sure there's anything on DM that I'd call "one of the band's best songs ever." Not even Setting Sun which is the first (and so far only) song on the record I'd give 5 stars.
Having said that... It's still better than Brain of J, which is great but also overrated here.

Re: MM F6: Setting Sun vs. Brain of J
Super interesting match. A few days ago I had a long drive ahead of me. I wanted a DM break of sorts so I thought let's play the arena songs of Backspacer then Yield. Then I wanted to finish it with Setting Sun as the closer of that set. So it was a play date for setting sun of sorts. Could it go over to the house of Yield get along and have a good day? Would it get anxious and want to go home?
Drive kicks off to just settle in ATW just to settle in . Force of Nature. Unthought Known volume is up now. Get ready for it Brain of J breaks yhe door down. I not new this album and it doesn't disappoint only a matter of minutes and I will be flying. It comes and goes in all its glory. Hummus is skipped GTF gets a repeat. Then Setting Sun. How the verse kicks in how sublime the trees go by the chorus oh this fits right in . Then the end of the song . Now I'm flying been give wings by song that is both a punch to the jaw and a worm embrace as the outro pushes me to another place . I feel the need to pull over and fully relieve the love that has just been shared. So yes of course Setting Sun gets my vote.

I like what Jeff said in the Zane Lowe interview about wondering which new songs they'll still be playing in five years: "that's the goal...try to have more songs stick for longer"Kevin Davis wrote:Based on the length of their current tours and their commitment to setlist variation, it seems unlikely that any song will build up a live presence the way songs used to in the days of 70-plus-date tours when the songbook was half the size it is now.stip wrote:Very few recent songs have built up a presence in the live shows that help elevate their status. Setting Sun is great but I think the newness of it is getting it more votes than it should. Brain of J is top 7 all time.
