That’s awesome! But also, I imagine, something of a B-tier story for a guy who has hung with Ron Carter.

But totally agree, too young. This whole album — “Rainbow Sign” — is amazing (with Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, and others).

Dude, ¨Rain, Rain¨ is beautiful. So small and quiet. I remember being very angry with how this album was perceived back in the day, like something very minor in his career.

I would not think to confine his work to either of those labels (though I guess technically "jazz fusion" qualifies since it's such a blanket term). He is one of the most eclectic and diverse artists in the scene. Heaven and Earth covers such a huge breadth of styles, and I'm still getting to know this new one but it's similarly sprawling orchestral jazz drawing influences from everything from Sun Ra to John Coltrane to hip-hop, soul and funk. Everything he makes is just so dynamic and rich. Movement and color everywhere

I really like Kamasi but minimalist he isn’t — I definitely understand feeling a bit like he’s always got the CAPS LOCK on. But ultimately I agree with Jorge about the music — a really compelling tapestry of different stuff.

Love this album -- "The Pioneers" and his cover of "Shenendoah" are two of my favorite Frisell tracks, and among a handful that really hooked me early in my discovery of his music.

I can understand where, especially coming after the incredible Gone, Just Like a Train, someone might hear this album and feel a bit like they're waiting for something that never comes. Frisell has a few albums like that, and he occasionally brings that flavor as a sideman. But let go of that anticipation and the music just washes over you. Perfect "back porch in Autumn" music.

yeah, i can totally see why people would be let down with this one, it feels too safe or direct or even mainstream for a lack of other words i cant find. But its one of my favs because of his tone, the vibe,...maybe because im with my dog right now ?
