That is an awesome setlist. I’m surprised they performed that many Dark Matter songs in one set. I was expecting 4 to 5 at most.joostone wrote:Already 9 out of 11 DM songs!

Listening to those YouTube vids of night one - and turns out if you write a song in a room together it sounds great when you play it in a room together

Fuck me they all sound incredible live. Upper hand’s intro and outro had whole new dimensions and Wreckage was just perfection. Fuck.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Playing them live is truly where the rubber meets the road, and, these songs slot in next to the existing catalog better than any in a long time.
Seeing them played live (albeit via Youtube), it really hit me in the face how much these new songs really are a consolidation of all their existing strengths as a group.

Lets see where we are at the end of the tour, but if they can give them the same feel then I think it's time for more people to really start entering this album into conversation with their 90s output.oneway23 wrote:Playing them live is truly where the rubber meets the road, and, these songs slot in next to the existing catalog better than any in a long time.

I'm not one to judge an album by how the songs translate live, but man, these DM songs sound great live.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

Some elements of this album sit with the giants of there catalog. Proof last night when Setting Sun closed a show. When did a song first preformed live close a show? Maybe not since the off ramp.stip wrote:Lets see where we are at the end of the tour, but if they can give them the same feel then I think it's time for more people to really start entering this album into conversation with their 90s output.oneway23 wrote:Playing them live is truly where the rubber meets the road, and, these songs slot in next to the existing catalog better than any in a long time.

I wouldnt hitch the pony to the end of the tour though. I mean they are 60 Ed will forget lyrics Mike will fall off the stage Jeff will have grumpy night. Ed's voice will suffer. It really won't kill the album. It is to be expected. I think the visual are probably a really good idea. I think in the moment in the room it probably adds a bit of power to a band that has to have lost a bit of a step. To eat some of their words from 30 years ago they should be commended. Also Ed needs a Greek fisherman hat or a Jones hunting hat.

Queue the conspiracy theorists... they didn't play Stevie because they are still waiting for Wotman to teach them how to play it

Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
It didn't necessarily occur to me while watching them live. What really struck me watching the Vancouver clips was how happy it made me to see them so obviously proud of their new work.stip wrote:Lets see where we are at the end of the tour, but if they can give them the same feel then I think it's time for more people to really start entering this album into conversation with their 90s output.oneway23 wrote:Playing them live is truly where the rubber meets the road, and, these songs slot in next to the existing catalog better than any in a long time.
Seeing them played live (albeit via Youtube), it really hit me in the face how much these new songs really are a consolidation of all their existing strengths as a group.
I was also just so grateful to have new songs which I believe could eventually sit amongst the top tier in their catalog.
No...the idea that I could reasonably be thinking genuine comparisons to their 90s work hit me in a subconscious way. It wasn't the live clips, it was actually while listening through a couple of Trag's latest drafts.
As he reaches the finish line, I tried really hard to to turn off my brain and simply listen in a way that allows the album to wash over me.
I finished up, and it occurred to me that I wasn't thinking about the album in terms of some "late-era classic", or, that it was "pretty good for guys in their 60s, 34 years in."
No, this is something different. This is a fantastic Pearl Jam record, no qualification. I feel like it's the first time in at least two decades that I'm not making some kind of mental rationalization to talk about how much I love their new album. It's been a great feeling.
