Ending on the percussion from the beginning would be great and a lovely change for the live version, but the studio version is perfect as is, especially without a fade-out. Fading the song out after saying “let us not fade” is kinda cheesy and too on the nose, and the album closing on that heart wrenching final note is such a beautifully sad moment. It highlights the song’s message to cherish the fleeting time we have before it ends, and that end can come suddenly.

It is the queen bee of the album. When combined with other parts of the album. It points to some sort of a spiritual transformation of Ed . He seems to really be leaning into faith as opposed to how he was holding on to hope in the past.

interesting-i havent read the song quite that way. i see it as affirming and resolving what he already knew and believed but maybe had startes to doubt
