Because Screaming Trees - Dust doesn’t have Vedder singing…,also wasn’t a criticism per se.

Stip brought up that sustained note on "love" coming out of the bridge. Indeed, that is the kind of thing that recalls early 90s Ed. There may have been examples in previous albums of him holding notes here and there, but they've not been highlighted in the song so much and WFS has that kind of style of sustained notes right from the start. It's not just one moment.

To be honest, I've been impressed with how Ed's been holding notes in the live performances of some other songs in the Vancouver shows. They haven't yet done WFS, of course. That will be a tough one because it's not just one note, the whole song requires a lot of breath support, the way it is sung. Going by how effortlessly Ed seems to be holding notes live in songs such as Setting Sun, Upper Hand, etc. I think he's in pretty good shape vocally. I don't get some of the criticism on the live performances, tbh. Whether he could have taken better care of his voice is a separate discussion. Just hearing what he sounds like now live, I really can't complain. I was impressed and pleasantly surprised for the most part.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

The guys on the State of Love and Trust podcast mentioned that the "mighty humble" thing came from a scrapped tune from the first session with Watt. I haven't kept up on the so the press and interviews, but does anyone know where it was that the band mentioned that bit of trivia?

I don't, but the Zane Lowe and Broken Record podcasts had the most info, and I do remember hearing this. Almost everything is archived in the second post of the Dark matter album thread if you feel like doing a ridiculous amount of research

Stone in his SPIN interview:
There’s a little snippet of something after ‘Stevie’ and before the next song, ‘Running.’ What is that?

It’s a little segue now, but we worked on it as a song that was never finished from that first session. We all loved one particular part of it, which Jeff, Andrew and I tweaked a little bit. In the end, we just decided it should become a transition.

If commenter at pearljam.com is to be believed, WFS was in sound check today.

they smashed it

if anything, it was the occasional lower note that was off; Ed nailed all the high ones as far as I can tell

Yeah, they pretty much nailed it. Ed sounds really really good overall, especially on that long "Love" coming out of the bridge.

What a time to be alive.

Sounded like a potential set closer!

Nailed it, albeit somewhat uncomfortably. The song starts high and just bends higher.

Incredible performance.

You can tell by Ed's reaction to the crowd cheers when he announces the song, and the smile on Jeff's face at the end, that they know they have an instant Pearl Jam live classic song.

Fantastic.

Good on Ed for sustaining those notes. Sounded great.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I think I might like this live version in the video more than the actual album version. I love this song but it’s the song that sound the most “brickwalled” to me. There are times during the song I hear a crackle which sound like a speaker blown out. It’s actually the only song on the album I feel this way about. Still love it though!
