honestly, I would expect more of this.
Why? 4 new songs in a row is going to kill any momentum of the show - not matter how great and how much we all love the new ones, most in that area will not, and this is something that seems out of character.
I get it, and I agree with you. Let's see what Portland brings. Something feels different though. I mean, it feels like they're starting to embrace being a legacy act, and a lot of legacy acts play the same set, night in, night out. i know they've mixed up the setlist throughout their long career, but what if they're wanting a little break from that? I bet they're also proud of the new material.

I hope I'm wrong.

guys they always play a lot of the new material in the first leg or first tour of a new album. They played Avocado almost full in the first show too.

Relax, they will play less songs from it once the tour settles. I do believe the band and the crowds are loving the new songs, so i expect at least 4 or 5 songs to stay for a while.

Frankly, im glad that they might not give a shit about momentum killing and they are excited about playing the new songs or whatever they want.

Maybe this isn't the band comfortably settling into a legacy act but rather a band going out there and playing the new music they love and winning the fans over.

I mean the four songs in question are the first four songs of the album. They are kicking off the main portion of the show (after their always slow and powerful intro) with the first four tracks of Dark Matter, and ending with the final track. I dunno how long they'll do that for, but I get it. They are proud of the album.

I would much rather see the new stuff played than the 7th best song off Ten played for the 200th time.

daft twat wrote:Immortality was my favorite Pearl Jam song the moment I heard it. My first PJ show was in 95 on the Vitalogy tour, and they didn’t play it. For whatever reason, they always just played it or played it at the next show. It wasn’t until my 11th show in 2003 that I finally heard it. Some woman near me with a terrible voice sang it loudly the whole time. :?

My 14 year-old son attended these shows with me. He doesn’t know all the songs, but when the first note of this one hit, he said, “Dad, Immortality!” This after I’d just wiped tears from my eyes during Long Road having just talked to my mom an hour earlier in what would be the night before her sudden (and successful!) spinal surgery.

This fucking band. No, they didn’t play Stevie. But they play Immortality. And Long Road. And Nothing and Smile and Alone and holy shit, the crowd made Jeremy special last night. And Do the Ev with the video is somehow even better. And Got to Give debuted, Quick Escape made an appearance, and In Hiding isn’t what it was, but it still gives me chills. This fucking band!
Nice that you got Immortality.

More importantly, your mom's surgery was successful!

From Riot Act onwards I've been consistently surprised/disappointed how little of their new material they play in shows. 3 or 4 doesn't seem enough to me. I saw 5 tracks from Gigaton over 2 shows on their last tour. Chances are that album will be largely buried now barring the odd Quick Escape or SBWM.

They have somewhat embraced being legacy act for some time now, but that still hasn't extended to setlists. They only repeated around 9 songs out of 25. That is in line with lots of stretches of their touring career, long before they were a legacy act.

I am also on the side of not caring much about the supposed momentum.

Just received this email about tomorrow:

“Hello,
Read on for important ticket information and what to expect for Pearl Jam in Portland on May 10.
Public Doors: 6pm
Is This Real?: 7:30pm
Deep Sea Diver: 8:15pm
Pearl Jam: 9:30pm
*All times subject to change”

Were there 2 opening bands in Vancouver? 9:30 seems pretty late for them to hit the stage.

Oh, I see this is Matt’s Wipers tribute band. Must be only for Portland. Wipers first album is a stone cold classic.

I had the opposite reaction. 40 different songs including Wash, Red Mosquito, Crown of Thorns, Alone, Immortality, In Hiding. Add in the guts to play so much of the new material, including ending the shows with Setting Sun, and that seems like a brave opening couple of nights.

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, I don't agree with their Binaural-Riot Act killing policy, but I do agree with their Backspacer-Lightning Bolt killing policy.

I agree, a really safe setlist would be another one with 6-7 Ten songs and only a couple of new ones.
