We went out in the yard to the septic tank, which was by no means totally backed up, but the ejector pump that shoots what’s in that tank up to then main line may be bad. A few thousand for it, so I decided to call off the plumbers and check to see if it’s on the county to fix, as we were told they maintain the septic.

County gets out here around 9pm. Nice guy who made a few calls and determined any maintenance is on us. I guess the sewers used to be maintained by a private company that went out of business in 2019, so the county took over. That company put in our septic, but then the agreement was homeowner maintains, so I guess that explains the misinformation we received.

Anyway, seems to be working okay now, after the plumbers observed evidence of a soft clog being cleared, so holding pat for now. If it backs up again, probably a new pump and snaking of the line from house to septic tank.
Had the county out again to see if they will clear the 150 feet of line from my tank to the municipal sewer. They claim it’s my responsibility, but are willing to dig deeper into the records to see if that’s really the case. All but about ten feet of it would be under township owned land and road.

In the meantime, having a fourth plumber out in the morning to run a camera up the line to get some sort of idea of the issue. He said there’s a 70% chance the clog or break in the line is only maybe 5-10 feet up the line, based on what he’s seen over the years. Everything crossed that’s the case, otherwise this could get expensive and time consuming, and time is something we don’t have much of.

Oh snap, remembered tonight that we pay for a rider on our home insurance for water backup, since we are worried the sump pumps could fail if there was minor flooding. It should cover sewer backups too, up to $10k. Clutch if we have to start tearing up the township’s streets, etc.

Sewer backage issue appears to have been resolved - an hour before our next showing. Crazy.

New pump for $3200 and $400 to scope and clear the line from the house to the tank, where my gut always told me it was. Should’ve been more assertive with the plumbers.

Looking forward to having one home and it being a rental in Australia!

Agreed. I do not want to fight over the lake house in divorce court.

Weighing the pros and cons, doing our homework, and making informed decisions are crucial steps in any sale, quick or not. After all, it's not just about closing the deal; it's about ensuring satisfaction on both ends.

A potential buyer is trying to invent us having an old septic tank on the property that hasn’t been properly decommissioned. He’s also claiming the home was recently hooked up to city sewer, when in fact this happened at least two decades ago.

We told him make an offer, but don’t lowball us based on these mere assumptions. How’s that for satisfaction on his end?

Yep if it’s not that it’ll be something else. Already been down that road once with this place.

We are leaning towards keeping it and renting it out now anyway. Could be quite profitable in the long run, and a potential spot to spend summers in retirement. Of course that means I’m now getting quotes on getting the roof and siding done before we depart.
