It just feels like a dull song — somewhat musically blank, yet somehow still cumbersome and overworked (especially the chorus — Eddie really puts a whole bunch of nothing through the meat grinder in that chorus). Like “Amongst the Waves” and “Unthought Known,” it is emblematic of a late-era tendency of Eddie’s to amplify melodies that feel awkward and half-formed into these big climactic moments that only underline how catchy the songs aren’t. Sad to say I feel a little bit of that in “Won’t Tell” too — not to the same degree, but still in the sense of wishing this big emphatic melody felt more internally logical and naturally satisfying.Leatherhead wrote:What is it about Gone that people don't like?
“Gone” has occasionally been performed really well live, with Eddie getting to the heart of something in the verses that the relatively sterile studio take and demo never quite find. As live PJ sometimes does, those versions take on an atmosphere that can downplay the shortcomings of the composition. There are a few in 2006 that feel this way, and I felt this way when I saw it in Moline in 2014. In that sense, I find it a hard song to say I dislike. But I get why people hold it in relatively low esteem.
