Well one could argue it's a 5 song athem run starting with Wreckage. Wreckage kind of becomes anthem in its back 3rd.

Daughter through Dissident?
Go through Dissident?
That's probably the closest comparison in my mind since Ten.

This album marries honest and reflective grief processing to a lush sonic safe space that can be as masculine as Zeppelin, as warm as any hug, and is as healing as a phone call from a friend. To borrow a phrase, it’s a record that says hey…me, too.
Man, I just think that’s a fucking brilliant thing for rock and roll to do.

well said, as always. Its a very healing record. it may well be the purest mature incarnation of what pearl jam has always wanted music to doMcParadigm wrote:This album marries honest and reflective grief processing to a lush sonic safe space that can be as masculine as Zeppelin, as warm as any hug, and is as healing as a phone call from a friend. Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
This album seems to be one of their most thematically consistent lyrically. There are a number of internal lyrical references/callbacks. More than I can think of on any other record. There are also some songs that reference lyrics from past records or lyrics from songs that the song musically sounds like. Or am I overthinking this?
Scared of Fear
…one last setting sun. (Setting Sun)
I’ll give, but I can’t give up (Waiting for Stevie, Got to Give)
React, Respond
It’s better to give, give than to deceive (Got to Give)
Wreckage
Rivers overflowing, drowning all our yesterdays (All Those Yesterdays)
Won’t Tell
The chains in my heart -> The change in my heart (Corduroy)
Upper Hand
Lonely ship on the horizon (Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb – Distant ship, smoke on the horizon)
Waiting for Stevie
You can be told to not give up (Scared of Fear)
You can’t take or give what you got (Got to Give)
Running
Was cleared for, for liftoff / Aborted my takeoff (Invincible from Earthling)
Something Special
If you could see what I see now (Setting Sun)
Got to Give
Stormy seas behind your eyes (The Who - Behind Blue Eyes)
Something’s got to give (Scared of Fear)
Setting Sun
If you could see what I see now (Something Special)
We can become one last setting sun (Scared of Fear)

given how eddie was writing lyrics (based on what we know) it makes sense he would be reusing/revisting some ideas - but it doesnt feel repetitive. more like working through similar ideas in different spaces

I think it is Quadraphina for the middle aged. I think it is very deliberate. I don't think he would ever come out and say concept or rock opera . He would just let it stand.

Waiting for Stevie: “You can be told to not give up”
Just makes me think of the “Don’t Give Up” shirt from back in the day.

Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
I’m still listening to this album constantly. As much as I love other Pearl Jam albums I can’t seem to skip a song on repeated listens. Some I like more than others but they are all awesome. My ranking of songs seems to be consistent since it was first released. Not sure if it will change over time.

considering how fast the songs were written, it makes sense. he also almost admitted it's a story front to back in an interview. i'm pretty sure he cracked that avocado was.Antelope wrote:This album seems to be one of their most thematically consistent lyrically.
