Dark Matter: Best Bridge

Post by stip »

im going to throw some Dark Matter mini tournaments together. Best bridge will be first. But I need some help:

What part of wreckage and Upper Hand counts as the bridge (if any)?

when a solo preceeds or follows the bridge before final verses/choruses (Scared of Fear/Dark matter) is it part of the bridge?

Okay, here are my best guesses - thoughts?

Scared of Fear (2:37-3:35)
React, Respond (2:06-2:30)
Wreckage (3:17-3:55)
Dark Matter (2:18-2:37)
Won't Tell (2:00-2:34)
Waiting For Stevie (2:01-2:28)
Running (1:22-1:43)
Something Special (2:15-2:30)
Got To Give (2:46-3:20)

Wasn't sure about Something Special and Wreckage. Not 100% sure where Got to Give transitions to its outro.

I don't think Setting Sun or Upper Hand have bridges.

Those 2 don't have bridges. They are my 2 favorites a crazy thought considering it is what PJ does best . I think that is a testament to how great Ed's delivery and timing are as well as the vocal melody are in Upper Hand. Setting Sun gets there with yhe brute force of cascade of really incredible individual parts.

Scared of Fears bridge is the moment on this record that takes me back to that magical time around 93-95. It is wonderful. Running reminds me of the way the bridge functions in the Beach Boys Wouldn't it be Nice. Taking a fairly routine digestible song and elevating it to to a level it doesn't feel as if it belongs until the next time you hear it. Then you remember oh yeah this is great.

Not convinced about Wreckage having a bridge.

For in my dream you told
Me to let the longing go
Oh, and the promise I still hold
Won't tell a soul

This is the first part of the album that told me they'd made a classic.

The title track has the best and only bridge on the entire album.

Classic Pj left turn into the interesting bit that should have actually been the premise of the song.

If the title track was Scared of Fear this would would be 100 percent true.

Almost true.

I’ve given it more time than it deserves.

Meant to be. In 25 short days time

Kinda don’t want to. Been lucky to see them 42 times all over the place.
This all feels like a retirement era money grab and it might ruin memories of better days while trading off them.
Likely not the last shakedown tour they’ll do either. It’s grim they’re even doing this one.

I understand a vote for Scared of Fear. I think it is the one, true, classic bridge as others have noted.

However, the moment on this album that slays me every time, from the metal door leak onward, is the Waiting For Stevie bridge. That thing is powerful as heck on the record (perhaps slightly less so live, despite the song being such a concert winner).

Honorable mention to Got to Give for that great and lengthy bridge.

Do we have enough space on the server to create a poll for this?

100%. First time I heard the SoF bridge it sent chills down the spine, sounded like that vintage PJ/McCready guitar tone that I haven't heard on record in close to 20-ish years
