I believe my library can help me do that, but I need to find time to go there.joostone wrote:Awesome! But now you're responsible for making a decent rip for usB wrote:Got one for $20 shipped on discogs.
This album is a banger. Even the stuff I didn't care about is awesome, but the stuff you wanted, Brad, Painted Shield, and Present Tense are all absolutely amazing.

Wow!! You really have me excited now. 'All' you need is a stereo cable and an audio interface (example: Focusrite scarlett) and you're set. Ive done this a couple of times. It's fairly easy to rip a vinyl. But not when the damn vinyl is not released outside of the USB wrote:I believe my library can help me do that, but I need to find time to go there.joostone wrote:Awesome! Re: The Official Brad (Stone Gossard) Thread
Shawn is one of my favourite singers of all time. His music is incredibly special to me, whether it be Brad, Satchel, solo or otherwise.
My introduction to Shawn was via The Day Brings on the radio sometime in the first half of 97. I have listened to that record countless times since.
I saw Brad support Ben Harper in 1998 - they were phenomenal, much better than the headliner. Shawn walked past me in the street to grab McDonalds before the show. I was gobsmacked that we'd just crossed paths at an intersection but I didn't want to bother him while he was eating.
Was over the moon to find a copy of Let It All Begin on CD while in Seattle in 2000. At that stage I had no idea that he had a solo record.
Saw Brad twice more in 2003. Spoke to Shawn and Regan after both shows, got some stuff signed.
I followed the ups and downs of his career closely from that period onwards, but I don't think he ever topped 1996-99, a period where he was involved in banger after banger (The Family, Interiors, The Full Sentence, Let It All Begin).
Lots of memories tied up in this man's music. Been listening to him a lot today.

Let It All Begin is the best of his solo records by a mile.VinylGuy wrote:Any fans of Shawn Smith as solo artist? any recommendations on what to listen?
Live at the Point is a terrific performance.
Shield of Thorns has some good material but Wrapped In My Memory is absolutely the cream of the crop in terms of Shawn's songs.
Everything he released after Shield had its moments but was also fairly uneven compared to his late 90s output, solo or collaboratively.
There used to be a real wealth of his solo work on bandcamp (finished work, demos, complete live shows) but it was wiped sometime after he passed away. His son and family are now working to get his songs back up, although I don't think they intend to upload everything that was taken down.

Re: The Official Brad (Stone Gossard) Thread
Shawn was probably best known for his exquisitely soulful vocals set against piano-driven material but I equally enjoyed the contrast of his voice against louder/heavier music.
Here's a playlist:
Goodbye Just In Case - Malfunkshun
Mr Brown - Satchel
High Noon - All Hail the Crown
Secret Girl - Brad
From the Swamp to the Stars - All Hail the Crown
Last Bastion - Brad
Mr Pink - Satchel
Colossus - All Hail the Crown
Some More Trouble - Satchel
Lift - Brad
Above Ground - All Hail the Crown
Willow - Satchel
Sweet Al George - Brad
Walk In Freedom - Satchel

Some of the songs are really solid and some of them don't really leave much of an impact.VinylGuy wrote:Listening to Welcome To Discovery Park right now

Brothers and Sisters, La La La, Never Let Each Other Down, If You Could Make It Good and Yes You Are are all terrific. The rest of the record doesn't stand quite as tall.
Coming off the back of Interiors I wanted WTDP to be amazing but it just wasn't.

Yeah I agree, I finished my listen and barely remember some of them. Guess I know remember why I never paid that much attention.
