It feels disorienting to hear Eddie, who seldom resists an opportunity to insert a curse word where a curse word previously was not, sing "crown of thorns" instead of "crown of shit."

I don't know what it is but, unless it's part of a tribute or something, it always feels weird to me when artists cover their close musical peers, i.e. '90's alt-rock bands covering other '90's alt-rock bands. Does anyone else feel this? It's not a strong aversion or anything, there's just something about it that I can't put my finger on.

i dont feel that way no. I think the cover works fine and im sure i would have been super happy to see it live.

Setlist seems good, kinda weird to see Black as opener. Immortality as a second song too.

But also getting Pilate, In My Tree, LBC seems great.

I saw him do "Hurt" in Chicago at one of his solo shows (it might even be the one that Bi_3 links to above) -- it was cool but it felt very distinctly like he was covering the Johnny Cash version, and it reminded me of when bar bands do note-for-note covers of other bands' covers of other bands' songs (Hendrix's "Watchtower," PJ's "Last Kiss," etc.)

As for the “crown of thorns” vs “shit” it almost has to be that he’s pulling from the Cash version rather than the NiN version since that’s what Johnny changed it to.

Yeah, it was definitely more common in the '60's and before -- the cultural perception surrounding authorship of your own songs shifted significantly in the 1960's though and by the '90's it was virtually unheard of for mainstream artists to piggyback onto one of their peers' hit songs by doing a cover of it. Not saying it never happened, it just wasn't part of the language of music when I was growing up (and really hasn't been since). Again, not actively averse to it or anything, it just always strikes me differently when it happens.

It used to be really common in the 60's and 70's and then it fell out of fashion. In the 90's, alt-rock bands weren't covering each other at all, except for weird tags or tongue-in-cheek jokes. I think 90's punk bands were more likely to cover each other.

It would have been weird for Pearl Jam to cover a contemporary in 1994. It feels much less weird now that 30 years have passed.

i kinda like seeing peers cover each other's songs. i remember watching audioslave cover 'seven nation army' live and it was incredible.

I could take or leave the Hurt cover, but last night it was very clearly Ed’s choice for a Cornell tribute. Gave a little speech beforehand about the guest lists being huge when they play Seattle, but really wishing there was one more name on it. Said he can’t stop thinking about him. Very emotional moment.

They went right in to Inside Job from Hurt, that really felt to me like an extension of the Chris tribute. The video screens showed Matt’s back & he was wearing a shirt with a drawing of Chris’ face. Got a big cheer from the crowd.
