It’s an interesting question. His counting stats aren’t that impressive (Hall voters tend to really care about those, or at least give players with big numbers some extra credit), but he’ll certainly add to them. His awards (MVP, 6 GG and 6 SS) look good, and he’ll add more. When he’s eventually eligible (15 years or so from now?) we’ll see how much more weight is given to advance metrics, which is where he really shines—he’s already top 100 all time in WAR and sure to climb.

Baseball Reference has a separate table with his bowling statistics, he should get in just got his three perfect games alone.

Sale is almost certainly the most talented pitcher of his generation, but injuries have really derailed the back half of his career. By my count, he probably missed upwards of 50 starts in Boston due to injury, including the shortened 2020, and those could’ve really pushed his counting stats upward—we’re talking close to 3000 strikeouts, probably close to 200 wins when he’s all said and done (although maybe not over), and his per stats have always been great (including 2nd all time in K/9). It’s still mind boggling how he never won a Cy Young.

He seems to have been back to form a bit with the Braves. If he can string along 3 really good seasons I think he has a good case.

Yes. Say what you will about pitcher wins, but 250 is a lot for the modern era, plus 3000 K, and he’s got that reputation of being a horse, I think it’s a lot going for him. Not first ballot, but I bet his voting share slowly builds over time and he eventually makes his way in.

Sabathia is a lock, I would not be surprised to see him be a first ballot guy. Impressive counting stats, OK, but also just widely liked and admired. Guy literally pitched until his arm fell off

I think Ichiro goes in alone next year with 100% of ballots, and there will be some foolery to make sure he gets that moment.
