It’s an expression of empathy for whoever is left behind. As in, “sorry to be doing this to you, at this particular point in time. I wouldn’t be if I had the choice.”

I have a minor gripe with the live versions of this song. I absolutely LOVE the way Eddie phrases "Lonely ship on the hor-IZON" on the album. On the live versions he reverts back to his added syllables on 'horizon' (hor-IZOYEHOONN) which kind of annoy me. Not a deal breaker but think about it every time
