Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
I keep going back to House of the Dragon. I imagine all those horrible youtubers referenced in that article were just dying to hate on that show. The show is lead by two girl actors! They cast a black man as the Sea Snake! HOW DARE THEY! Then they watched the show. They were awesome. He was awesome. The show was awesome. They quit the bitching. People really want to like the new Lord of the Rings and Star Trek and MCU and Doctor Who and Star Wars. They reeeaaallllyyy want to like it. Just be good. As subjective as that is you just gotta be good.

I'll stop now. I hope each episode continues to get better for you Joe. We'll hold hands again when Andor returns. Hopefully.

You're good, my guy. You don't have to go anywhere. I've enjoyed this chat with you quite a bit.
I'd probably be more worked up if I still gave a shit about Twitter. Or YouTube. Or yadda yadda... I'm not really on any of that stuff anymore. I only know about this "controversy" because of the likes of this thread and the pods I listen to, which are thoughtful and interesting and aimed at celebrating the thing even as they largely admit that the show isn't totally working for them (muc like me). It's amazing what thoughtful, critical discourse can do. It's easy to enjoy something that isn't perfect when you choose to engage in a certain way. And I don't think that's bad or disingenuous or brainwashing. It's just reading a text and talking about all of it, but choosing to focus on the stuff that works over letting the stuff that doesn't break you.
I like that and I want more of it across the board.

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
My take is both are wrong. Acolyte isn’t an 9/10 but it isn’t a 2/10. Somewhere in the middle imho.epilogue wrote:What's your take on the disparity between critics and audience reviews of The Acolyte?
I just wish this was better overall. The two leads actors are fine. The story is easy to follow it’s just very clunky. Even the Jedi Wookie just seems to be added in due to having a Jedi wookie is an interesting idea. But it’s not adding anything to the story.
I remember before Andor was released the question was why do we need to follow this side characters story. And it ended up being one of the best Star Wars projects ever.
So going back to high republic times should be an interesting piece of the Star Wars puzzle.
It’s looks like a very low budget fan film IMHO and not a $180 million quality Disney project.
Even more worrying is they want a season 2 of this garbage.
My only other take is I’ve always enjoyed the live action series to the animated. I’d much prefer to watch Book of Boba and or Obi-Wan than clone wars/rebels etc….
Acolyte might be changing that opinion

I swear I don't mean this as an insult, but it's way nuttier to me that anyone would be having a conversation centered around "Is the 15th Star Wars film/tv show released since Disney bought the property better or worse than the previous 14, and has its adherence to a particular political viewpoint impacted its popularity?"
The much more valuable conversation to me is "How have the capitalists and politicians done such an effective job at colluding to keep the masses occupied with commodified culture wars at the expense of actionable civic engagement?"
But hey this is a Star Wars thread so probably I'm in the wrong room.
Mando season 2 and Andor I can highly recommend Trag.

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
I’ve tried to make sense of the complaints here
Are the lads denying the fact that any form of Star Wars gets shitbombed online simply for having women and people of colour in it?
Are they really denying that happens? Cos it’s been happening since TFA and it’s horrific. It’s been getting worse if anything.
And worst of all the ones doing it will try disguise their racism and misogyny up, as criticism of the show/movie.
Sure hope that’s not what’s happening here though.

I totally agree with you. But SW or these IPs are part of the problem, not the problem themselves.tragabigzanda wrote:Perhaps.epilogue wrote:This thread has veered fully into nutjob land. What the actual fuck?

There has been some minor but still good stuff coming out from these shows

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
If it's bad, you shouldn't like it only because it's Star Wars, and has major roles for women and a diverse cast. It still has to be compared to TOS, Andor, Mando, R1. So easy to always blame that those not liking it, are not like you politically/culturally.
That's not to say that you can't or shouldn't like something that most other people hate. It's fine if you genuinely do.

In general I find audience reviews/scores are more trustworthy than critics scores.

Why are scores or reviewer scores even a thing?
Do people really use that crap as any guide before watching?
Have people abandoned the ability to form their own opinions that much?

Notes:
Get off the internet/stop reading comments sections/youtube/twitter/whatever. Who cares.
2nd: Why anyone would create any art based off audience feedback is beyond me.
3rd: This show can exist. It doesnt have to be great or terrible. It can just exist.

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
I just think nothing from the PT to Disney SW has had the standard of the OT and it leads me to believe a few things
1. The OT was lightning in a bottle, came out at the perfect time, and can’t be duplicated.
2. The “retcons” that turned Luke and leia into siblings, and Darth Vader their father, work because GL got lucky since the scope of the Star Wars story at the time were just these three films. A novel idea that they got lucky with.
3. Star Wars tv, in general is mediocre. A few highlights from a few shows but overall, SW doesn’t work spread out over episodes. It loses focus, plots try to be epic and aren’t , and it’s watered down to fill and 8 episode arc.
4. The internet in general has destroyed SW , and a lot of other pop culture people hold dear.
5. People shouldn’t worship pop culture. It’s just companies trying to get your money
6. Adults should grow up and stop buying toys.

Star Wars is public domain in 2073, so let's just wait a while and we can all do what we want with it.
