It was the mid-nineties and I was a teenager, so yes. Then. My list would be quite different now.

Yet, I could make the colorable argument that Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are absolute must haves. I would also place both currently in my top 5 favorite albums ever.

Back in high school I wrote a feature for the school newspaper titled 5 Albums You Should Be Ashamed You Don't Own. Pink Moon was one of them. The others were Jeff Buckley's Grace, The Cure's Disintegration, Sigur Ros's Agaetis Byrjun, and Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream.

I was prepared to hate this list based on the title alone, but... that's a great fucking list.

They're certainly of a type. I had moved on from my punk phase and was approaching my shoegaze & indie rock phase at the time

Offspring was ages 12-15. By senior year I was way over them

Those are all very much albums a high schooler into music in that era would have liked, not surprising at all. I had all of those too (even though I never took to Nick Drake)

pink moon probably in my top 10 albums of all time

I haven’t listened to that album in probably 20+ years but I have a distinct memory of really loving it and listening to it a lot in the 2000-2004 range of time, which coincided with a long delve into the Velvet Underground (not that they really sound anything alike), and Pink Floyd (also very different from the other two). I have no idea why I moved on, but it’s all stored away in some memory bank of the time, ready to be enjoyed again whenever.

Fitting that you also mention Pink Floyd. The connection here is that Joe Boyd produced the first 2 Nick Drake albums. Prior to that he had produced Pink Floyd’s first ever single “Arnold Layne” as well as an early compilation of theirs.
